UPDATE: Israel’s economy is growing so fast, it will leapfrog the Netherlands and Australia within the next 18 months, in time for it's 80th birthday—not by 2030, as predicted—to rank second only to the USA in GDP per capita of all nations with populations over 10 million.
Congratulations to Israel, which, despite the war and six weeks of economic shutdown in the spring, now has the 4th highest GDP per capita among states with over ten million people—behind only the USA, the Netherlands & Australia. It will likely leapfrog into 2nd place by 2030.

Satya is right. The way to make SI safe is not to train it with a sense of self, its own moral philosophy, and permission to act as a conscientious objector. That’s the “alignment” approach and it magnifies the control problem. The engineering approach that Satya describes is different: separate the supply of intelligence from authority over it. Surround non-deterministic models with deterministic controls, observability, privilege limits, logging, and the ability to always contain or shut them down. Treat models/agents like powerful insider risks, not moral patients whose psychological wellbeing is at stake. As Satya points out, the most trustworthy system is the one that lets us trust the model the least — not the one that encourages the model to develop independent agency and grievances. Engineering safety is not the same thing as “alignment.”

Today is October 7th. A few years ago a group of barbaric lunatics went to a concert full of hippies and slaughtered them. They filmed it with glee. They murdered with a psychotic euphoria visible in the videos they proudly filmed. Sadistic, irredeemable savages; whose leaders immediately said they would do it again, and again. The goal is a total elimination of all Jewish people. Not just Israelis, but all Jews, even the ones wearing a Keffiyeh and attending rallies. Your neighbor in LA- they want to slit their children’s throats and make the parents watch before torturing and killing them too. Your friend in NYC attending synagogue- they want to bomb the building and kill everyone inside. It’s only been three years, but many of our youth don’t even know what occurred that day. They don’t understand the depravity of the enemy we all face. Their fight isn’t against colonialism and Zionism- the stated goal from these radical terrorists groups is the death of every Jewish person on the planet. And it doesn’t stop with the Jews…

As the economies get larger, companies will get larger, and shareholder wealth will increase, including of course the largest shareholders. So the richest man in the world will always get richer and richer. There is no maximum, and there should be no maximum. Unless you want the economy to shrink.

THREE YEARS. Three years since the moment my life changed forever. Even now, it feels so unreal that sometimes I still can’t fully comprehend that I was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Sometimes it feels like it was all just a nightmare I somehow woke up from. But at the same time, the pain is always here. It never really leaves, and sometimes, it only gets stronger. This year, when I went to visit the graves of my friends, I felt like it had somehow become even harder. Maybe because the hostages are finally home. Maybe because I’m no longer part of that fight. Or maybe because everyone else has already graduated, moved to Tel Aviv, and started their careers. And you remain there, like a memory from another life. A life that was innocent, young, and happy. A group of friends simply enjoying life, dreaming big, with no idea how quickly everything could change. I miss you every single day. With every step I take, on every path I choose, I find myself wondering what it would be like if you were still here beside me. As more time passes, I realize that soon, more time will have passed since we lost you than the amount of time I actually had the chance to know you. And that is something I still can’t accept. To me, you are always with me. And for those of us who have lost someone we love, it isn’t easy to watch the world keep moving when some people’s lives simply stopped. It isn’t easy to live with the guilt of being the ones who are still here. But we have to keep going, because that is what they would have wanted for us. We have to learn to live alongside the pain. Embrace it. Forgive it. Understand it. But at the same time, keep looking forward. Give yourself permission to LIVE.

I just left a screening of the 47-minute film documenting Hamas’s October 7 atrocities. The Jewish community formally invited Mayor Mamdani to join us. More than 100 seats. Every single one occupied except one. His.

Oct 7th. 3 years ago today the world lost its moral compass. It felt as though we entered a twighlight zone where right was wrong and wrong was right. I was in NYC on 9/11, and I was in TLV on 10/7. After 9/11 the western world united to fight evil. But after Oct 7th it seems as though evil had come out of the darkness to supress the candle of the west. As the expression goes, antisemitism is always the canary in the coal mine. We must continue to push back against these evil forces that want to destroy the West and regain our moral compass.

Anduril is building America's largest shipyard since WWII. This space needs bold investment and decisive action. In the 1790s, Baltimoore clippers were the fastest and most advanced sailing ships of their time. King George III didn't stand a chance. Time to run the same play.
Anduril is investing $3.7B into Arsenal-2. The next great American Shipyard.

OCTOBER 7, 2023: SHE KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO DIE. Libi Cohen-Meguri, a 22-year-old infantry officer, went to the Nova music festival. She was shot while fleeing the party. At 8:11 a.m., she called her parents and said: “I’ve been shot in the stomach, I’ve been shot in the arm, I’m losing blood. I’m going to die.” Calmly, quietly, she understood; these were the last minutes of her life. She asked her parents to call Tomer, her twin brother, and Maya, her little sister, and said: “I’m going to die. I just want you to listen to me. I love you, Yariv. You’re the best father I could have asked for. Mom, stop screaming. Just listen to me. You are the best mother we could have ever had. Don’t forget to be a good mother to Tomer and Maya after I die. Tomer, how lucky we were to live this life together. I love you. My Maya, never forget—you are the treasure of my life.” When she finished speaking, her parents told her to get out of the car, lie down on the road, and pretend to be dead. With her last bit of strength, she got out of the car and laid down on the road. “Mom, they’re coming to shoot me again,” Libi said after lying down. While her mother listened on the phone, shouts in Arabic could be heard, and then a barrage of gunfire. It didn’t stop. It kept going, until the call was disconnected. And that’s how Libi died—with demonic beasts from the pit of hell standing over her and emptying a full magazine into her body. Libi died with LOVE on her lips: love for life, love for her family, and love for her people. Her memory will forever be a blessing. NEVER FORGET. NEVER FORGIVE. NEVER AGAIN IS NOW. Israel is hunting down every single Palestinian and Hamas terrorist who participated in the October 7th Massacre—to kill them all. They’re living on “borrowed time,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Sooner or later, every one of these monsters will be found and eliminated.

The single best predictor of founder success we’ve seen, above all else, is raw determination. Across the 100+ successful founders we’ve interviewed, we identified 7 signals that measure this: (1) A history of being under-estimated. There was always someone early in their life who doubted them, whether that be a sibling, parent, teacher or colleague. (2) Lifelong iconoclasts. Never fit in with the group. Quirky tastes in hobbies, music, food that others find unusual. (3) Some evidence of prior failure. Whether that be previous companies, product launches or career pivots, they always failed at least once (and often multiple times). (4) Irrationally optimistic. If their lead engineer quits or a funding round fails or a key customer churns, they are never pessimistic and never lose hope. Always glass half full. (5) Lack of financial motives. The desire to succeed was never driven by money. Cash served as a scorecard and nothing else. (6) Funding struggles. Almost all struggled with early funding rounds, but did not give up in the face of capital scarcity. Lack of capital forced discipline. (7) Institutional rejection. They were almost always rejected by a top institution early in their career (sports team, school, college or company).

“Dad I’m calling you from the phone of a Jew! I just killed her and her husband. With my own hands I killed 10 Jews!” Chilling conversation from Oct 7th, between a Hamas terrorist from Gaza and his father, who is crying with pride. Never forget this sick evil!

Jesus, I've never seen an interview like this! 🤯 Watch the whole thing or at least read my notes: 1. Yaniv was sitting in Row 11, not Business Class. He heard a woman up front yelling “Stabbings!" (She didn't say who.) Yaniv immediately stands up to see what's going on. 2. Wife & daughters are sitting around him. Then the plane starts shaking. Plane rolls very sharply leftward and back to horizontal in a terrifying way. 3. It hits him that the commotion isn't a fight in Business Class, it's happening in the cockpit. 4. He yells “Buckle up!” and runs toward the cockpit. He's 6 feet away from the cockpit when the plane suddenly nosedives. 5. It felt like it nosedived for an eternity. (In reality about 30 seconds at 30,000ft/min, reaching speeds of about Mach 0.96. Those 30 seconds of nosediving cut the plane's altitude in half.) 6. “I was flying.” He was blown around upward, sideways, he was pressed against the floor extremely hard. (A 180lb man would effectively have 540lb of downward force on their body as the first nosedive leveled out.) 7. “I kept trying my hardest to get up off the ground. At some point, I was finally able to, when the plane leveled off a little.” He speculates that a system kicked in to automatically stabilize the plane. 8. He goes to the cockpit door and there's a crew member in a white shirt, who looks like he's also a pilot. He's grabbing the cockpit door with both hands, with his body leaning down. I didn't know if he was trying to open the door, or trying to hold the door closed! 9. “I get to him, I move him away, he doesn't resist. I open the cockpit door — it was a little difficult because the pilot was lying down on the floor behind it, the one who was attacked.” 10. “I went in. The terrorist was crouching with his knees on the instruments between the two pilots' seats. There was no one in the pilots' seats. He was hitting the instrument panel, trying to break the equipment.” 11. Yaniv yells “Come help!” to any other Israelis who are also in the aisle. He doesn't know how many there are because his back is to them. 12. Yaniv immediately grabs the terrorist by the throat and starts moving him away from the controls. The terrorist resisted, but Yaniv's struggle to get him out of the cockpit only took a few seconds. 13. A handful of men who'd already gotten up from their seats together with Yaniv were already standing in the aisle dividing up responsibilities among themselves. They take over subduing the terrorist. 14. Yaniv turns back to the cockpit controls. At this point, the plane isn't nosediving, but it's still angled downward. He looks out the windshield and sees ground in the distance. 14. He leans over the pilot's seat, grabs the yoke and pulls it upward. He feels the nose of the plane come up. 15. A few seconds later, a pilot (not an Israeli) comes up behind him and says “Release the controls, I'll take it.” 16. Yaniv wasn't sure whether the other pilot was trustworthy, but he said “ok” and let him sit down at the controls. He intended to supervise the new pilot. 17. Yaniv turns around and briefly helps the men who are dealing the terrorist blows to subdue him, since apparently the terrorist is still resisting. Eventually the terrorist stops resisting, he possibly gets knocked unconscious, and the men tie him up with headphone cables. 18. Yaniv also helps the men remove the wounded Indian pilot from the cockpit. Then he goes to close the cockpit door with himself and the replacement pilot inside. 19. At this point, a member of the flight crew arrives at the cockpit door and wants to come in. Yaniv asks the replacement pilot whether to let the crew member in. He says yes, he's with us. 20. The flight crew member comes in. He has a tablet with a map. Yaniv closes the cockpit door with the three of them inside. He latches it. 21. Now Yaniv is focused on checking that the replacement pilot and the crew member are acting properly to land the plane. He sees that the pilot is talking on the radio to ground control. It sounds good to Yaniv, even though he doesn't speak much English. Yaniv can tell he's reporting that there are injured people, that we're heading in a certain direction, and that he's requesting help. 22. Some of the other Israelis were assigned to guard the rest of the flight crew. At this point, they feared that the whole crew could be conspiring. This is why the entirety of the stressful incident was about 40 minutes long. They couldn't relax until they landed and the flight crew got off the plane. 23. When they landed, one of the Israelis on the plane bought eSIM cards with a data package for everyone. As soon as they get reception, he gets a bunch of messages with pictures of himself on international news. 24. The landing was an incredible celebration. Singing, what fun we were having. 25. Let's rewind. You wake up in the morning before getting on this flight. Did something prepare you for this engagement? Something in the army? Some instinct? “Well, in the army, I was working the closest to the fire in the kitchen. (I wasn't a cook, I'd, you know, get the food and divide it up.)” 26. Yaniv personally didn't feel scared to board the second FlyDubai flight they sent. What are the odds lightning would strike twice? “Even being in this situation once was like winning the lottery.” 27. Did FlyDubai offer some kind of compensation for the incident? Did they contact you at all? “Nothing.” 28. Will you fly again? “Fly again? Sure.” 29. When are you going back to work? “I want to on Sunday.” What an interview. Makes me proud to be Israeli.
