Life! You plan your 24th wedding anniversary. Your wife moves ahead to Tanga, Tanzania, to wait for you at a hotel because you, instead of flying, have chosen to get there through your passion (biking). You lead your nine fellow bikers from Uganda, through Kenya to Tanzania. And as you approach Tanga, a truck knocks you dead. Rest well Dr Stephen Asiimwe.

When the great tree falls, do not immediately watch the branches. Watch the people who once sat beneath its shade. Some will mourn the tree. Others will measure the timber. The birds that built their nests there will suddenly find another tree. The hands that were fed by its fruit will forget who planted it. Old grudges will emerge from the forest, dressed as tradition, duty and concern. And while everyone argues over what belonged to the tree, look for the woman sitting quietly beside its roots. She remembers when it was only a seed. She watered it before it gave shade. Protected it before it bore fruit. Stood beside it through every storm. She loved it when there was absolutely nothing to inherit. Yet when the tree falls, even she may discover that those who once bowed before its branches have no difficulty stepping over its roots. That is the cruel lesson of death: Some people loved the tree. Others only loved the shade. Time eventually tells the difference.

The National Immunization Symposium, held under the theme "Strengthening Partnerships, Innovations and Systems for Equitable Life-Course Immunization," has officially been opened by the Minister of State for Health (Primary Health Care), Dr. @DrAyumeCharles. In his remarks, Dr. Ayume reaffirmed the importance of sustained investment in immunization, noting that vaccines have played an important role in eliminating diseases such as smallpox. He called for increased research and innovation to reduce the number of doses required for multi-dose vaccines and emphasized the need to strengthen engagement with Gen Z mothers, particularly in urban areas, to ensure children complete their immunization schedules. The Director General Health Services, Prof. @olaro_charles, described vaccines as one of the most cost-effective and efficacious public health interventions. He commended the Uganda National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (UNITAG) for its invaluable role in providing evidence-based guidance that strengthens routine immunization services across the country. Speaking on behalf of the UN Family, @WHOUganda Country Representative, Dr. Kasonde Mwinga called for strong partnerships and trust building to drive demand for vaccines. She pledged WHO's commitment in tracking and identification of zero dose children and strengthening health systems. In his remarks, Dr. @RichardKabanda2, Commissioner for Health Promotion and Education, urged participants to develop practical and sustainable solutions to preserve and build on Uganda's immunization gains. He emphasized the importance of strengthening existing partnerships, shaping new collaborations, and enhancing coordination among stakeholders. Providing an update on routine immunization, Programme Manager Dr. @baganizimichael highlighted ongoing efforts to reach zero-dose and under-immunized children. He noted that Government has expanded access to immunization services through integrated service delivery approaches and the piloting of a vaccine last-mile delivery model in partnership with National Medical Stores. Following successful implementation in the Busoga region, the initiative is now being rolled out to the Teso and Bukedi regions. The symposium is held with support from @PATHadvocacy, @WHO, @gavi, @UNICEFUganda and @CHAI_health bringing together policymakers, health professionals, partners, researchers, and implementers to share experiences, innovations, and strategies for advancing equitable immunization coverage across all stages of life. #MOHatWork | #NISUG26 | #VaccinesWork

I am in #Uganda, where the government has mounted a prompt and capable response to the outbreak of #Ebola. Screening at the borders helped detect cases arriving from neighbouring #DRC, and the country’s surveillance, testing and case management systems are doing steady work. Of the 19 confirmed cases so far, 14 were among people who entered from DRC and five are Ugandan nationals. Sadly, two people from DRC have died, and our thoughts are with their families. @WHO is supporting Uganda, alongside @AfricaCDC and partners across the region, as the country leads this response. With continued collaboration, I am confident this outbreak can be brought under control.

Current Ebola update as of 5 June 2026 Four patients have successfully recovered and been discharged. The 3 new cases were contacts to confirmed cases who have been in institutional quarantine by the Ministry of Health. Unfortunately, one person, a Congolese national passed on. May her soul rest in eternal peace. The country remains safe and open for all. #MOHatWork | #FightEbolaUG26
