I think it's great that all the model providers are coming out with their own CLIs, but let's be honest, no dev is going to want to have five different CLIs installed. They're going to want to learn and use one tool with all the models. For me, that tool is OpenCode.

It's official. I've moved to Linux desktop. I just can't do Windows 11 - forced AI, forced Microsoft Account, data harvesting - not signing up for that. I've chosen Kubuntu to start with. I'm sure over time I'll want to experiment with different distros, but for now this works.

Everytime you `BEGIN TRANSACTION' and `INSERT`/`UPDATE`/`DELETE` data without having explicitly defined Aggregate boundaries, you're defining the boundaries implicitly/haphazardly/inconsistently and you're bound to have a bad time (re: scaling throughput or changing requirements)

The annoying paradox about beautiful code is that it’s never in the spotlight: bad code forces us to see it over and over, but the good gems often hide in the small pieces that just work and don’t need to be touched. Like preparing gourmet food and eating alone.

Nothing new or game changing, but: DDD/JSON is the new(er) Object/Relational Impedance Mismatch. Try building a proper domain model without any JSON or serde annotations/attributes infecting your model - not easy.

Hello @martinkl - I just saw your new Secret Colors book and was about to purchase it, but I can't find a DRM-free digital version (I appreciate the irony). Will that ever be available?

My apologies @unmeshjoshi if you've answer this already, but is your "Patterns of Distributed Systems" writings headed towards a Addison Wesley Signature Series book? If so, very rough publication date guess??? Thanks in advance!

. @ScottWlaschin I really like the Railway metaphor when discussing function composition with others. Do you have any shapes/templates that you can share for putting together diagrams similar to the ones you've used in your writing?

I've only read through chapter 8 so far, @ericnormand, but Grokking Simplicity is an amazing book. It defines terms and structure for things I've done implicitly for years, but now makes it easier to articulate with others. Thank you!

Shopping for KVM switch - I want a 2 computer switch, DisplayPort @ 144Hz, with 4x USB 3.0 ports, in a rectangular device box - is that so much to ask for???🤦‍♂️

In the 1983 movie Wargames, at the beginning of the movie, the solders snap open what looks like acrylic, tamper evident, seals over authentication codes. What are those called? Searching and can't come up with the name(s) used to refer to those seals... youtu.be/8-T_uhQ0iE4?t=198

Replying to @markgritter
@markgritter Read your recent Go Memory Usage article. Thanks for all the detail. Do want to call out the Rust does NOT have "manual memory management". In other words, you do not need to "delete" objects. Best analogy is that Rust has a compile time garbage collector.
1
@markgritter I will also agree that Rust does have a stronger learning curve than other languages, but I think that it is often exaggerated to be more significant that it really is.
1
@markgritter But really glad you didn't have to do a rewrite. It's great when you can wrangle a difficult problem like this into a solution.
FedEx is terrible. That is all.
Memory access. You're making a salad. L1 cache: Ingredients are on a chopping board L2/3: Ingredients are on a table RAM: Ingredients are in a fridge DISK: Ingredients are at the grocery HTTP API: Ingredients are on a different continent
What's the most difficult programming concept you can explain in a tweet?

Org/team culture is, in large part, a combo of environment, skills, and behavior. Often hard to evaluate externally, but process and tools give some indication. In software eng., choice of languages, platforms, and tools give *some* insight into culture.

Today @RobinhoodApp is down again. Was interested in their tech stack; looked at eng. job postings. Python, Go, RabbitMQ. *For a financial trading platform*, I'm not impressed - nor surprised they are having issues with scaling/latency.

When trying to upsell a paying customer or wanting to get someones attention, when did it become acceptable to unilaterally dictate someone else's schedule?
