Montenegrin citizens are 2.5 times more likely to die in road accidents than #EU citizens. Most deaths are preventable, yet 🇲🇪 citizens r twice as likely not to wear seat belts. Together with @EUWB6_TCT & @VladaCG we started a campaign to change these habits and save lives. 🇪🇺🇲🇪

Montenegro has the end of its EU accession negotiations in sight. This is thanks to years of work by all pro-European forces, in government and in opposition. In Podgorica, I met with President @JakovMilatovic, Speaker @AndrijaMandicDF, Prime Minister @MickeySpajic and opposition representatives to urge them to keep the shared commitment to bring Montenegro inside our Union. All political actors need to continue working together to complete the remaining reforms and strengthen good neighbourly relations.

It is a great honour for Austria to take over the chairmanship of the Berlin Process in 2027! 🇦🇹🇪🇺 We remain a reliable partner to the Western Balkans and are committed to advancing the region’s European future. Our priorities will be youth, reconciliation and regional cooperation. We want to bring young people together across borders, overcome historical divisions and bring the region closer to the European Union. Our goal is clear: The Western Balkans must grow closer become a part of the EU as soon as possible. This requires more than political commitment. It requires concrete action and tangible results for the people of the region. My sincere thanks to Prime Minister @MickeySpajic for hosting this year’s summit and to @bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz for Germany’s continued commitment to the Berlin Process. (BK)

Defining weeks and months lie ahead for the Western Balkans. Defining for Montenegro to cross the EU finish line. Defining for Albania to keep pace on its EU path. Defining elections in Serbia this weekend. And a defining choice for Kosovo on the rule of law and international justice. That’s why today’s talks with regional leaders come at the right time. My Berlin Process Leaders Summit doorstep:

Democracy is never to be taken for granted. It should be protected, nurtured. Every day - and everywhere. Our European Centre for Democratic Resilience brings together EU Member States. So they can strengthen their democracies. The resilience of their societies. And so they counter foreign interference. As of today, candidate countries can also join this work. We can learn from one another. We can become stronger together.

Montenegro has closed three more negotiating chapters: Economic and Monetary Policy, Statistics, and Social Policy and Employment. Reforms under these chapters will help keep prices stable, give governments accurate data to make better decisions, and strengthen workers’ rights and safety at work. Close to two thirds of all chapters are now closed. The finish line is within reach. All political forces, in government and opposition, have a responsibility to put the interests of Montenegrins first, work together and deliver the remaining reforms without delay.

Europe celebrates its people, their languages, traditions, cultures and identities. It will celebrate Montenegro in exactly the same way. That is what ‘Evropske niti Cetinja’ today were about: the threads of 🇲🇪’s identity & heritage, woven into the wider European tapestry. 🇲🇪🇪🇺

Together with Member States, we have made more progress on enlargement in the last two years than in the past two decades. It is now time to prepare for a larger Union. This requires realism and pragmatism. That is exactly what the Communication we published today brings. A concrete assessment of the impact of enlargement on our Union. And operational actions to guide our next steps.

For the Western Balkans, a European future is becoming real for those delivering on their commitments. At today’s Berlin Process meeting, I stressed enlargement in the region will mean a safer Europe and more economic growth for everyone. We also spoke about what still holds progress back: unresolved bilateral issues and the wounds of the past. Reconciliation and good neighbourly relations are a vital part of the work ahead.

When neighbours remember the wounds of the past together, they open the way to a shared future. In Morinj, I joined Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister Ibrahimović and Croatia’s Foreign Minister Grlić-Radman to pay tribute to Croatian prisoners of war. The EU was built by countries determined that past conflicts would no longer define their future. All of the Western Balkans can make that same choice.
