Mayor Brett Smiley and law enforcement officials have confirmed the individual responsible for the Brown University mass shooting has been found deceased.
Claudio Manuel Neves Valente died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in New Hampshire after warrants were issued charging him with murder and related offenses.
Our hearts go out to the victims of this awful tragedy. Thank you to our law enforcement partners as well as all of our neighbors who were instrumental throughout the investigation.
I am forever grateful for @PVDMayor’s steady hand during this dark day for Providence. Proud to call him a friend, a mentor, and one of the finest public servants I have ever known.
Tonight, we gathered in the wake of the devastating shooting at Brown University, grieving the lives affected.
In a moment marked by fear and heartbreak, we chose to come together. As we mark the first night of Hanukkah and prepare to celebrate Christmas, we’re reminded that light does not erase our community’s loss, but it can help guide us forward.

President Biden has dedicated his life to bettering our country, and I join my colleagues across the country and around the world in thanking him for his extraordinary service. From revitalizing our economy, to passing unprecedented climate legislation, to making historic infrastructure investments, to helping cities like Providence build back better after the pandemic, the Biden-Harris administration has an exemplary record of accomplishment over the past four years. Democracy is on the ballot this November, and it's time to come together as a party and prevent a return to the disastrous Trump years. I look forward to hearing from the President later this week.
