Know what’s happening in national EMS data to assess, compare, and intervene. Take a look at some of our work in EMS care, motor vehicle crash incidence, and workforce dynamics!
🚨 New research! 🚨
Uncover impactful EMS trends:
👉 Trauma care pain scores missing in 1/3 of cases
👉 Behavioral health calls underrecognized by dispatch 80% of the time
👉 Workforce exit rates up to 26% in some states

Using national EMS data, we observed over 900 additional obstetric-related emergency activations in the first three months following the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision. The majority of this increase occurred in states with protective abortion policies.

What airway is dominant among prehospital out of cardiac arrests?
@gagecb3 uses multiple prehospital datasets to tackle this question in @JAMANetworkOpen, take a look!
This study of 1.7M adult OHCA cases using NEMSIS data confirms that ETI remains the dominant airway strategy, 2018-2023, contrasting prior findings from smaller datasets. ja.ma/4ci6Meb @gagecb3
Excited to announce that this week I joined @ImageTrend_LLC as an EMS researcher and Epidemiologist!
The past 4+ years at the @NREMT has been incredible and I owe so much to both the organization and the mentorship of @AshPanchalMD.
Excited for the future!

We really need to improve gender and racial gaps in EMT and paramedics.
Haven’t moved the needle over the past year.

New EMS workforce conflict research using @NREMT data!
In this analysis, Dr. Halia Melnyk evaluated 674 EMS clinicians’ descriptions of conflict exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Open Access: doi.org/10.3390/ijerph201058…
More below! (1/5)
While a single source of conflict to intervene upon would be desirable, it is not practical. Active surveillance of EMS clinicians during public health emergencies may provide stakeholders with real-time data to design interventions to combat increased occupational stress.

It was exciting to work with Dr. Melnyk and her @OSUWexMed CATALYST team on this project. Thankful to Dr. Melnyk, @mcalearney, Dr. Di Tosto, and @AshPanchalMD for all their work.
(5/5)
In our sample, 51% (857/1,686) reported COVID-19 exacerbated conflict and 79% (674/857) of these respondents described that conflict. Paramedics reported experiencing more conflict than EMTs.

We mapped responses to a systems model of clinician burnout and professional well-being from @NASEM_Health. Many responses had co-occurring codes, indicating that exacerbated workplace conflict may be due to various factors across multiple levels of their EMS system.
