In January 2025 my mom’s lung cancer spread to her brain. The drug with the best chance of helping her was approved in China but not here.
A doctor told me, almost as an aside, that if she were Chinese she could buy it at a pharmacy.
So I flew to Shanghai and came home with 26 boxes in my luggage. That was 19 months ago. My mom is still here, still working, and in her words has had an amazing three years.
The drug was approved in China in 2023. The FDA approved it in July 2025. It still is not for sale here. I know of at least 30 Americans who have made the same trip.
I have been scared to tell this story because I worried it could cost my mom access to the medicine keeping her alive. But the problem matters more than my silence. These drugs need to be developed and available here, and that means FDA reform.

为什么不应该经常吃青口？
新西兰专门建了青口养殖场用来净化海水，不靠任何化学药剂态。
青口贝，大自然顶级的“净化器”：一只成熟的绿唇青口，一天就能过滤300多升的海水！
但问题恰恰就出在这里——你以为你吃的是海鲜，实际上你吃的是一个把海里各种脏东西全给“吸饱了”的滤芯：
1. 吸满了剧毒（而且高温都杀不死）
青口天天过滤海藻，如果刚好赶上赤潮，它们就会吸入大量的“贝类毒素”。最要命的是，这种毒素不怕滚水、不怕炒、无色无味，高温根本毒不灭。万一吃到有毒的，轻则恶心发麻，重则瘫痪甚至没命。
2. 含有“重金属与微塑料沉淀池”
它长在海边吸了一辈子水，海里的铅、汞、砷、镉这些重金属，还有到处漂的微塑料颗粒，全都攒在它的肉里。长期经常吃，等于在给自己的肝脏和肾脏“堆毒素”。
3. 细菌病毒的“大本营”
青口体内特别容易藏有副溶血性弧菌等海水细菌和寄生虫。一旦没彻底煮透或者图新鲜生吃，分分钟让你上吐下泻、急性肠胃炎发作，免疫力差的人甚至可能引发败血症。
4. 还是个强力过敏源
青口里的“原肌球蛋白”含量很高，不少人对这玩意过敏。轻的浑身发痒起荨麻疹，重的直接呼吸困难、过敏性休克。
如果吃的话，处理青口时，里面有几个部位绝对不能吃，必须清理掉：
1. 足丝（足丝线 / 绒毛）—— 必须拔掉
2. 内部内脏团/泥肠（黑色/暗绿色包裹物）—— 建议抠掉或不吃
3. 闭壳肌上的杂质与泥沙 —— 冲洗干净
