Strategically located in the heart of the North American Corn Belt, the new Syngenta Seeds R&D Innovation Center in Malta, Illinois was designed to give farmers a permanent “seat at the innovation table,” in the words of Warren Kruger, our head of field crops seeds development for North America. The Innovation Center includes a 10,000-square-foot building with state-of-the-art laboratories—and 88 acres of farmland where each newly developed seed, trait and agronomic practice will be put to the test. It’s an environment that allows farmers to experience R&D innovation firsthand and fosters even closer collaboration between Syngenta’s R&D teams and the farmers who stand to benefit from their discoveries. With labs devoted to genotyping lab, trait assessment, automation and VR/AR, the Innovation Center is the latest addition to our global constellation of more than 150 R&D hubs. Researchers based in Malta will collaborate with colleagues around the world to drive changes on behalf of farmers worldwide. Robotic precision breathes life into DNA sequencing in the genotyping lab—"accelerating our breeding program," according to Tim Symanietz, head of North American genotyping for Syngenta Seeds. Outside, a 12-plot demonstration field brings four key principles of regenerative agriculture to life: minimal soil disturbance through no-till or low-till farming; cover crops to promote soil health; crop diversification; and precision agriculture (using GPS seed and soil mapping to ensure that biological and chemical inputs are only applied where they’re needed). “By using regenerative agriculture practices, we learn by doing and can share what we’re learning with farmers,” said Liz Hunt, head of sustainable and responsible business for North America. In Malta, as at our other research hubs around the world, we’re forging connections between farmers and scientists as we make progress on a shared mission: making agriculture more productive and profitable, even as it becomes more sustainable.
