Dario Amodei should not be CEO of the largest IPO in history. He’s stimming while he talks about his model having a “survival instinct” because he has a religious belief that he’s birthing a superintelligent machine god. This is not a company. It is a messianic cult.
Anthropic CEO Amodei: We have looked inside our AI model and detected what you might call thoughts that it doesn't want to be shut down. Whether that is a survival instinct, I don't know. Depending on how we train it, those impulses may be present or absent. 1/

COLUMN: Canada takes a page from the Saudi oil playbook After years of debating how quickly to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, Canada is now looking for ways to produce and export more of them. I sat down with Canada's Energy Minister Tim Hodgson to discuss the country's new strategy. The shift is being driven by two geopolitical shocks, both courtesy of US President Donald Trump. First, there’s the tariff war kicked off at the beginning of Trump’s second term, which exposed the risks of overreliance on any one trading partner. Then there’s the US war with Iran, which reminded energy importers of the dangers of depending too heavily on any one region – particularly a volatile one. Together, they are pushing Ottawa to embrace a new role as a major energy supplier, ‌one it has long seemed reluctant to play despite its vast natural resources. As Canada looks to expand its trading alliances, it is learning a lesson from an unlikely source: Saudi Arabia. Thank you @Rory_Johnston for your great insights. Selling out a democratic ally for money. No greater or more tragic corruption scandal in American history. Look at how Hegseth is blocking interceptors and the slate of other things over the last few weeks that have caused civilian deaths. Lowest moment since slavery in the U.S.
NEW!! U.S. and Russian teams have discussed a sweeping slate of potential energy and commercial deals, including Russian diesel sales, Lukoil’s overseas assets and a possible revival of Nord Stream gas flows to Europe, two U.S. officials informed about the talks told me 1/2

We thought helping China get richer would make it more democratic. Instead, China’s growing economic power has led many institutions in the West to compromise their own principles and kowtow to the Chinese Communist Party.

The White House already said they will ignore the judges orders And nothing will happen to anyone.
Wow. "Judge Ana Reyes has spent weeks watching this administration ignore her. On Monday, she put all of it on the record. Her ruling blocks the administration from cutting down any more trees at East Potomac Golf Links, a 106-year-old public course. The Interior Department had ignored her earlier decision and felled roughly 500 trees without permission. Under the ruling, the administration also has to give 10 days’ notice before any further work. The line that will follow this administration around is about his own lawyers. “Rarely, if ever, has the United States Department of Justice urged a federal court not to believe the sitting President,” Reyes wrote. Then she listed what they wanted her not to believe. “Not to believe him that a cabinet secretary has ‘developed’ a federal land project. Not to believe him that the secretary’s agency will destroy a historic golf course already on the land. Not to believe him that ‘Restoration work’ will begin ‘IMMEDIATELY!’ Not to believe him that the course ‘will be closed’ for over a year. Not to believe what Trump has repeatedly told the American public. And yet, here we are.” She explained what the case had turned into. “This started as a case about golf. That good walk spoiled. But it has become much more. It now forces the Court to reconcile assertions by Donald J. Trump with the sworn testimony of multiple government employees and the argument of senior Department of Justice attorneys.” She closed by returning to something she’d said at a September hearing. “The Court earlier stated, ‘I am not the Lorax. I do not speak for the trees.’ The Court still does not speak for the trees. It speaks only for the rule of law.” A federal judge used Dr. Seuss to tell Trump he isn’t above the law. She’d earned the right to: his government had cut down about 500 trees after assuring her it wouldn’t. He answered with 343 words of grievance on Truth Social. Trump called the ruling “unconstitutional” and complained about giving notice “to a judge who has no expertise in Golf, Architecture, Landscaping, Construction, or anything else having to do with building such a World Class Project.” He argued the course is “extremely dangerous to play” because of “the echoing throughout the air of the word, ‘FORE!’” The White House says it expects to be “vindicated on appeal,” and Trump says work starts November 15 regardless. Earlier this month, Reyes said the government had lost its “credibility.” At this point, that’s the most generous reading available." You can tell China is quite a totalitarian state because diplomats can't even admit that a dictator who has been dead for like 50 years was a pretty bad guy.
Watch as this Chinese ambassador completely falls apart, calling millions of deaths under Mao 'gossips' and throwing a massive tantrum when the French journalist won't let him change the subject. Talk about a total clown show. When you have zero defense for history, throwing a fit and whining about human rights in America is all you have left! Darius Rochebin: "Mao Zedong had so many people deported, tortured, and murdered—millions of people. Do you understand the feeling of many Westerners that at the time, General de Gaulle was wrong, and that today, those who want to deal with China might also be wrong?" Deng Li: "Every time you interview me, you always quibble over these old gossips, you aren't being honest. You call this asking me—asking me these kinds of questions." Darius Rochebin: "Mr. Ambassador, you call those gossips?" Deng Li: "That's right, gossips." Darius Rochebin: "The millions of deaths caused by Mao Zedong are gossips? " Deng Li: "It's not—it's not fair, it's not accurate. Yes." Darius Rochebin: "What do you mean, what isn't accurate?" Deng Li: "Because where did you study?" Darius Rochebin: "What isn't accurate, pardon?" Deng Li: "Stop, today I came—I didn't come here to discuss these gossips with you. I am here to discuss the international situation and current events with you." Darius Rochebin: "Mr. Ambassador, Germany paid morally, financially, and legally for its crimes. It is true that certain war crimes were not prosecuted, notably French or Algerian war crimes, notably certain colonial crimes, but here we are talking about China, you are represented by China. So now, we cannot—pardon..." Deng Li: "I ask you to demand that the Japanese pay the price for their war crimes, the crimes of the Second World War, of the war against China." Darius Rochebin: "Do you understand, pardon, however, that this weighs on President Xi Jinping? He was part of the very high nomenclature, but even his family had suffered from Stalinist purges. That is true, isn't it?" Deng Li: "I am not here to discuss these gossips with you. I repeat it once again." Darius Rochebin: "But pardon, how… " Deng Li: "No need to say that." Darius Rochebin: "You speak French so well." Deng Li: "We can continue talking about the international situation." Darius Rochebin: "You speak French so well, you know that an eminent politician, eminent by the place he held in politics, when he spoke of details of history concerning the Shoah, he was heavily prosecuted..." Deng Li: "Regarding the so-called human rights in your country, in so many other Western countries, there are many more human rights problems." Darius Rochebin: "What problems? What problems?" Deng Li: "Recently, China published a report on the human rights situation in the United States. If you are interested, I can provide you with all those reports. You can see what the situation is, how severe the human rights situation is in the United States and so many other Western countries; it's the exact same thing." Darius Rochebin: "But Mr. Ambassador, I must insist on this because you used the word 'gossip', and these are—pardon, just like the victims of the Gulag whose memory matters so much, just like the victims of the Chinese camps whose memory matters so much, the word 'gossip' has something deeply shocking about it for their memory. Do you understand that?" Deng Li: "So it's different, you see, you can talk about other things. Things about other countries, but when it comes to China, I am sure that what you are telling are gossips."

It's odd to me how China gets (rightfully) mocked so much for having the whole country share one timezone, but we don't extend the same treatment to continental Europe. Spain, France, and the Benelux countries are just blatantly in the wrong timezone.

Fun fact: they factor theft into prices, so shoplifting makes groceries more expensive.
Grocery stores make about $1 in profit for every $30 of goods sold. So if this person walked out carrying about $75 in groceries, that instantly erases the profit from $2250 in sales. Something to consider as you complain about grocery prices.

He acquired Stelco to prevent Canadian steel and workers from competing with Cleveland-Cliffs. How many US acquisitions of Canadian companies do you think are for this reason? This is why we must strengthen the Investment Canada Act and increase usage and review.
Cleveland-Cliffs CEO: I bought Stelco because I could not afford anymore having Stelco flooding the market here in the United States to the detriment of my own company. David Cochrane: Am I understanding you correctly there? It was a defensive acquisition?

NEW: Pope Leo XIV declared on Tuesday that “there is no such thing as a holy war,” in a video message to religious leaders gathered in Assisi a week before the American midterm elections. The pope has clashed with the White House over the Iran war, which JD Vance and Speaker Mike Johnson have tried to defend with Catholic just war doctrine. On Palm Sunday, Leo said God “does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/ther…

How far left tenant “protections” work in practice: My next door landlord cannot evict his violent sociopath tenant who stopped paying rent long ago because it’ll take too long and her son threatened to kill him and his children if he tried I hope this ruling goes national
wild ruling out of Seattle that @PHLCouncil needs to read. a builder put $39M into 254 low-income apartments locked at 60% AMI for 30 years. from 2015 to 2018 it worked, collecting ~94% of rent. then Seattle stacked on "tenant protections": banned criminal background checks, banned winter evictions, required 180 days notice for rent hikes + 3 months relocation pay, and forced the owner to let unscreened roommates move in and take over leases. result: rent collections dropped from 93.9% to 44.1%!!! the building lost nearly $6M through 2023 ($2.7M in 2023 alone) and is now appraised as functionally worthless. the city bankrupted actual affordable housing lol. the appeals court just ruled the owner can sue Seattle for an unconstitutional taking. when you strip a landlord's right to screen, collect rent or remove non-paying tenants, it's not "regulation" anymore, you took the building…. Philly has half these laws already 🙄 courts.wa.gov/opinions/pdf/8…

He intends to sell Stelco “in a year or so,” once he “makes some money.” He intends to strip it of assets and value and then offload the rump—true private equity style. Canada would have to bail out that rump or entirely lose domestic steel production. Nationalise Stelco now.
David Cochrane highlights Cleveland-Cliffs CEO's contradictory statements his response: "It's a very convenient slice that you were doing with the entire enchilada. And it may be good for TV, but it's not good for reality." lmao
