In 2024 just before the season opener, Veronica Burton learned she had been cut by the Dallas Wings. After being drafted 7th overall in 2022, it just never quite clicked. She averaged just 2.4ppg in 2023. Burton says she was embarrassed, she went home & worked out in a YMCA with her high school coach, waiting for her shot. The Connecticut Sun picked her up later that season, and the Valkyries saw her special potential. They picked her in the expansion draft, she was the 2025 WNBA Most Improved Player, and now she’s a champion. Resilience. #valkyries

In 1996, Bay Area Venture capitalist Joe Lacob had a dream of building a championship sports franchise. Joe believed women’s basketball was the next big thing & wanted to show his daughters that women’s sports matter. So he invested in the newly formed American Basketball League & became the owner of the San Jose Lasers, but the league abruptly folded in 1998 & Lacob lost $10million dollars. He said he had no regrets he still believed in women’s basketball. 30 years nearly to the day that the Lasers played their first game, the Valkyries played in game 1 of the WNBA Finals. Now they are champions. A dream deferred until the world was ready. You did it Joe. #wnba #valkyries

I’m working on something related to small VC funds that I hope to launch within the next few weeks. ✨
If you already invest in multiple funds under $50M, I’d love to chat and trade notes.
I’m especially interested in how you evaluate emerging managers, build a portfolio across funds, and think about the long tail of early-stage VC.
What has worked well? What have you learned? What would you do differently today?
More from Liftoff - @Gartner_inc warned up to $3.5T in AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment by 2030, estimating an $5 trillion gap between planned data-center investment and realistic AI revenue. @IgniteGTM
