much of what is framed as “woke young staffs” and “an abandonment of standards” within establishment journalism is in fact reactionary boomer/Gen X rejection rhetoric of newsroom integration

In solidarity with every1 at @npr who received their layoff email yesterday. I remember the swirling emotions and dizzying feelings after getting laid off in 2019. I saw someone describe it yesterday as a twilight zone. This is all so valid, and my heart breaks for each of you.

I want to remind you that two things can be true— you can be grateful for your time at npr AND mad as hell for being someone let go and treated this way. And as journalists, it’s hard to not tie your value into the content you create.

DEI spells DIE within corporate media. All my people are expendable here. Our culture is only valuable when it can be thoroughly commodified. If covering the most-consumed genre on the planet is not financially viable at this institution, public media ain’t truly for the public.
🧵Louder Than A Riot has been cancelled by NPR. Our producers and editor have been laid off, although NPR would like everyone to stay on until June to finish publishing the show. We are taking some time to process what this looks like for our staff. 1/4

Heya this is specifically for publicists + others pitching the team at @nprmusic--we are undergoing layoffs for the rest of the week and feeling sick and uncertain. Please have patience, maybe don't hit "send" on that nudge. Kind notes accepted, I received one and it meant a lot

Putting Megan Thee Stallion’s reputation on trial proved hip-hop has never felt more secure in showing off its misogynoir. But the roots of this hatred run deeper than one case. Rule No. 1: Being Exceptional Doesn’t Make You The Exception bit.ly/3mVikyC
