Heavy rain is forecast across many regions over the next few days, raising the risk of flash and localized flooding. With the ground already saturated and heavy rainfall upstream, further flooding is highly likely, and may be imminent. The Somali Red Crescent Society (#SRCS) together with the wider Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, is on the front line as a first responder. Its teams are reaching remote communities through dangerous terrain, where no other organization operates. #BishaCas #Deyr #ElNino #FloodAlert #AnticipatoryAction

Rain on 8–9 October in Galkayo has raised concerns among displaced families in the Buulo-Bacalay and Bulo-Kontrol IDP sites, particularly over flooding, overflowing latrines, and contaminated water. In response, the Somali Red Crescent Society's Galkayo branch has launched a door-to-door awareness campaign. Run by trained community volunteers with support from community leaders, it is reaching 110 of the most vulnerable households. The campaign covers flood risks, preparedness, safe water and sanitation practices, and evacuation procedures. #ElNino #BishaCas #Preparedness

Amid forecasts of a strong El Niño bringing above-average rainfall, flash floods, and riverine flooding to parts of Somalia, the #SRCS/#BishaCas, with support from #ICRCSomalia, is strengthening preparedness efforts. Key focus areas include boosting search and rescue capacities, early warning systems, and community evacuation readiness to protect lives and livelihoods in high-risk areas. These proactive steps aim to reduce the expected humanitarian impact on already vulnerable communities. #ElNino #Somalia #HumanitarianResponse

What is different from the last floods of 2023 in terms of preparedness and response? - Good news: we have better data and good lessons from the last crisis to learn from. - Bad news: far less funding/capacity. All humanitarian actors and authorities are on a shoestring...
