In his keynote address at the 2nd KALRO Scientific conference and innovation expo, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, PS Science and Research, noted that research is the backbone of socio-economic transformation, driving progress in food security, livelihoods, and national resilience. Behind every agricultural breakthrough lies head on discussions. Research is not just about discovery; it is about finding practical solutions to farmersโ challenges and ensuring innovations are relevant to local contexts.
He added that, funding research is more than a scientific necessity- it is a food security, economic, and national security issue. Without adequate investment, societies remain vulnerable to climate shocks, market instability, and hunger.
He noted that research funding is a shared responsibility, requiring strong partnerships between public and private actors.
"As we fund research, we must also allocate resources to empower young people. Universities should integrate entrepreneurship into agricultural education, equipping students not only with knowledge but also with the skills to innovate, create businesses, and transform farming into a modern, profitable enterprise." he said.
He said universities, colleges, and research organizations such as KALRO must converge to share knowledge and create synergies, noting that unified body of research institutions would streamline funding and amplify impact on society.
Science, research, and innovation form the engine of national transformation. By linking research to practice, empowering youth, and fostering collaboration, societies can unlock agricultural potential and achieve inclusive growth.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Laibuna noted that a vast majority of agricultural produce comes from small-scale individuals operating within the informal market. These farmers are the foundation of the Bottom-Up Agenda, which aims to reduce the cost of living, expand the economy, foster inclusive growth, and create jobs.
"Food security is security," outlining the necessity of a sustainable food system built on three pillars: environmental systems, social systems (factoring in gender and culture), and green growth driven by climate-smart agriculture. To achieve this, she highlighted the critical role of KEMIS (Kenya Agricultural Market Information System).
To ensure future sustainability, any technology produced must align seamlessly with the realities of the informal market, specifically focusing on water, weather tracking, energy sufficiency, and knowledge-smart tech. Moving forward, the sector must aggressively adopt new technologies like AI, enhance funding options, and heavily leverage strategic partnerships.

Day 2 came to a successful close with insightful discussions, scientific presentations, and meaningful engagements.
In his keynote address, Prof. Shaukat Abdulrazak, Principal Secretary for Science and Research, emphasized the importance of research and innovation in driving food security, economic growth, and national resilience, while calling for increased investment and stronger partnerships.
A key milestone of the day was the launch of KALROโs Commercialization Strategy, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming research outputs into market-ready innovations and ensuring that technologies reach farmers, agribusinesses, and other end users for greater impact.
The day also featured scientific paper presentations by researchers and students, engaging panel discussions, and valuable knowledge exchange on advancing agricultural transformation.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the farmers who visited the Exibition to learn, interact with experts, and explore innovative technologies. We also thank our exhibitors for showcasing cutting-edge products, services, and solutions that continue to make the Expo a vibrant platform for learning and collaboration.
Together, we are advancing science, innovation, and agricultural transformation for a food-secure future.

Kenya continues to lead Africaโs dairy sector, producing approximately 5.4 billion litres of milk annually.
This achievement is driven by deliberate investments in the livestock sector, including the National Mass Vaccination Programme, increased access to affordable sexed semen, and the deployment of milk coolers across the country to reduce post-harvest losses.
Our focus remains clear: boosting productivity, improving quality and putting more money in the pockets of dairy farmers.
