A year ago, a non-academic friend listened to a talk I gave. I thought it went great. My friend disagreed. She said that academics are experts at making interesting stuff boringβ€”and that we should all take a speech class. So I did. And here are 6 most useful things I learned.

Ahem... this advisor is definitely guilty as charged, and it is definitely a sign of investment in students' development.
A reminder to grad students that drafts reviewed by advisors almost always look like they were part of a sacrificial ceremony. It doesn't mean you won't become a great science writer. Inversely, it does mean ur advisor is invested in ur development (and has far more experience).
