Too many youth are denied the future they deserve because of a juvenile system that doesn't serve them. This must change. @JuvenileLawCenter's report shines light on the need for a more just system. #BrokenPromises🔗jlc.org/resources/broken-pro…. Thank you JLC!
On this #NationalHigherEducationDay it's also important to talk about keeping the promises we make to kids who take dual credit classes in high school, and making sure that promise is accessible to the most marginalized students who are often overlooked in the conversation.
Replying to @WashingtonStand
Check out this co-released @EdTrust research brief for how we can ensure all students - especially those who’ve been historically excluded from dual credit - can enjoy the full benefits of these programs: edtrust.org/resource/increas…

Students need more #diversity in their school learning materials, not less. Join #CantBeErased, an event w/ @RepPressley, @MsPackyetti, @PrestonMitchum, & more to learn how you can rally against #BookBans & #Censorship. Wed, 4/17, 3pm PT 👉 ctt.ec/Ra3At+
Many thanks to Charles for his leadership.
At Stand WA, we support Charles' leadership and the leadership of other incarcerated individuals in the legislative process and urge DOC to better support their advocacy efforts. Must read reporting from @gracesdeng ✍️washingtonstatestandard.com/…

Students are accessing dual credit courses in higher numbers than ever – but will they earn college credit as a result? @seattletimes

Starting the week off by shouting out @SenMarkoLiias, @runsinthehalls & @gruberobinson for supporting and championing the Ninth Grade Success Initiative! Great work is happening in WA, even in Everett, as mentioned last week in The Daily Herald! heraldnet.com/news/funding-a…
Fantastic piece anchoring current policy in our state/nation's complex history. The super-predator myth, the displacement of Indigenous peoples, disproportionate targeting of Indigenous and POC kids. All connected. Thx @LunaBReyna s/o @ICHOOSE180

Great piece from Luna Reyna on HB 1324!
HB 1324 hopes to remedy the harm of the racist 'superpredator' myth, which has disproportionately lengthened the sentences for Indigenous and Black youth.

The books they want to ban are the same books that teach kindness to students. The same books that would help reduce violence. The same books that would create safer environments for students to learn in.
Thinking about this speech from Leader @RepJeffries – 55 years after Dr. King’s assassination.
Learning about Dr. King, celebrating his life, and honoring his legacy matters. #MLK55
Such a powerful program -- follow this thread to learn more about it and about how to take action to keep it going in Washington state!

Did you know that Ninth Grade Success Teams are not currently in the state budget?
Our goal is to collect 250 signatures on our petition by this Friday so legislators know how important this approach is!

So grateful to @AlexesHarris and @CCYJ_WA 's founder, Justice Bobbe Bridge, for their leadership here. This issue is one of @WashingtonStand 's top priorities and we've learned so much from these two brilliant, powerful women throughout this process.
It makes absolutely no sense - definitely not evidence based- children as young as 8 are charged financial penalties. We must end juvenile fines & fees now. We can with WA HB1169. #DebtFreeJustice seattletimes.com/opinion/juv…
Congrats to SLPS! What a win! @DrKScarlett just so incredibly inspired by you and excited to see your impact in St. Louis!

I have been thinking quite a bit about these words from James Baldwin. #BlackHistoryMonth

ALT “One of the things that has always afflicted the American reality and the American vision is this aversion to history. History is not something you read about in a book; history is not even the past, it's the present, because everybody operates, whether or not we know it, out of assumptions which are produced only, and only by, our history.” – James Baldwin
