My least favorite were mostly from later seasons. John Stamos's Gates always left me bored. Dr. Simon Brenner was a fucking travesty. Luka started out fine but became a total dick. #ERSpotting
My fave characters on rewatch were some of my least fave when I watched it originally: Carter, Benton, Abby, Susan Lewis, Weaver. I always hated Mark Greene. Romano could have been a fave if he weren't so unevenly written. #ERSpotting
There was also the late '90s/early '00s problem of networks generally wanting more episodic TV and fewer ongoing story arcs. Before streaming, execs wanted viewers to be able to jump in at any time. I remember many showrunners expressing frustration with this. #ERSpotting
There was a lot less focus on the medicine and a lot more on the relationships, and a lot of episode-ending montages set to Snow Patrol songs with people looking sadly out of windows. #ERSpotting
There was an appreciable decline in quality after season ten and my research shows that they got their fourth showrunner then. He was the first who hadn't been with the show since the first season, and it showed. This was also the year that Grey's premiered. #ERSpotting
There were a TON of promising medical students/residents who just disappeared; I assume that was actor availability but it was disappointing to get into a character only to have them leave and then have ANOTHER storyline about Greene being pissy or Carter being rich. #ERSpotting
Once Romano and Weaver got out of administration (by helicopter or by choice), they never had fights with the admin anymore except for one time when Sam got in trouble. Seems like every other week, Greene was arguing with Anspaugh. #ERSpotting
Also, characters got smoothed out the longer they were on. Dubenko got less weird. Pratt got less angry. Morris suddenly became a great doctor. Weaver got friendlier. Corday hopped from man to man instead of demonstrating how hard it was for a woman in surgery. #ERSpotting
But one of my biggest frustrations was the missed opportunities. For example, they never knew what to do with the nurses once Carol left. Haleh, Chuny, Lydia, Malik -- they were all on the show for a long time and never got a real individual storyline. #ERSpotting
So that's the good stuff. I don't know the reasons for the decisions I found frustrating -- could have been network notes, lack of care about continuity, actor availability/desire to sign a long-term contract, etc. #ERSpotting
Binge watching also gave me a greater appreciation for the acting and writing and relationships between the characters. Before the rewatch, I would have said the Doug/Carol relationship was my favorite but now it's Benton/Carter and even Weaver/Carter. #ERSpotting
