Something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately, it’s really hard to build a community around streaming, TikTok, or YouTube when it feels like most of your audience is made up of other streamers and creators. And I don’t mean that in a negative way, creators supporting creators is great. But when the majority of your viewers are also working on their own content, it changes how engagement works. People are less likely to hang out long-term, less likely to become regulars, and less likely to share your content beyond the creator bubble because they’re focused on growing their own stuff (understandably). It’s a lot different from having an audience made up of people who just enjoy watching content. People who follow because they genuinely like your vibe, not because of networking or mutual follows. That kind of audience tends to stick around, engage more consistently, and be more present in your community. For example: • A creator might lurk in your stream, but have to dip to work on their own stream or video, so they’re not building a real viewer habit with your content. • Comments might be more about algorithm boosts than genuine responses. • You post a TikTok and it gets a couple likes from mutuals, but never really leaves the creator circle. It’s hard to break out of that loop and find viewers who aren’t also creators, but those are the people who usually help grow a lasting, active community. And reaching them takes a totally different approach, more discovery-based content, more accessible posts, more patience. Not complaining, just something I think more people go through than we talk about.
