When weโre ready, we must start telling ourselves the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
Nigeria has a serious problem with rape culture, and we must confront it honestly. A UK lawyerโs reported argument that a Nigerian man accused of raping a minor acted because of his โcultural backgroundโ should make us reflect on the image we project to the world.
Rape is not our culture. Abuse is not tradition. Culture must never be an excuse for sexual violence.
We cannot change the narrative by denying the problem. We change it by confronting it, holding perpetrators accountable, educating our society, and protecting victims.
The truth may be uncomfortable, but acknowledging the problem is the first step towards changing the narrative.

The argument that we canโt exempt overseas care workers from retrospective settlement extensions because they might leave the sector is not just wrong. Itโs cruel.
We should not be keeping care workers in the sector by trapping them in it, at the mercy of sponsors who know they have nowhere else to go. That creates the conditions for exploitation and a race to the bottom.
If we want care workers to stay, the answer is simple: treat them with dignity, improve working conditions, allow them to progress in their careers, move between employers and integrate into our communities.
And honour the five-year route to settlement they came here under.
We have an opportunity to do the right thing.
Firm but fair. Letโs not forget the fair bit.
