Here's @BrandSanderson doing an incredible thing and going to bat for indie authors like me and my friends. We've lamented Audible's low royalties forever, but their market dominance meant we had little choice in it. This is like the President of Fantasy taking our side.

NEW: income inequality in US & UK is so wide that while the richest are very well off, the poorest have a worse standard of living than the poorest in countries like Slovenia ft.com/content/ef265420-45e8… Essentially, US & UK are poor societies with some very rich people. A thread:

Hey @elonmusk tell me why this isn’t real-time doxxing? Fox News has a drone flying over people and reporting their exact location “right now.” Is that why you’re saying wow? Because you’re stunned at the violation of your policy?

For those asking in good faith - To get on a plane/Eurostar to the UK, people from most countries (from all poor countries & those that produce refugees, like Syria, Sudan, Iran, etc.) you need a visa. No visa, no getting on. The UK govt does not issue visas to asylum seekers.
Story on #r4today about how misinformed the public is about refugees. A case in point, this dude in my mentions who, like many others, reckons they risk their lives in small dinghies in the Channel out of some perverse thrill-seeking when safe regular routes are available 🤦‍♀️

The entirety of Musk’s feed now is him interacting with right wing trolls, often antisemitic and racist accounts, validating each conspiracy theory they toss out about how all the algos were never “used on liberals”

If anyone still hesitates to call these people fascists, just look at what they actually say.

In my reporting on clean energy misinformation I've seen one argument over and over. Wind turbines kill birds. While this is true, it misses an important piece of context: Fossil fuel power plants kill 35x more birds per GWh than wind turbines do. 🧵

This research is actually quite sinister? It conflates MPs being called a “disgrace” and a “liar” - some MPs are both! - with, say, racist or sexist abuse. We should fear the conflation of pointed scrutiny with bigotry - because it threatens democracy.

This is the AI that supposedly measures "toxicity in tweets." It literally didn't work on racist tweets sent to me, but did flag a compliment as 90.29% likely to be toxic.

Just did a test run on how it measures a compliment, vs how it measures a selection of racist tweets I've personally received. It didn't even process the racist tweets.

twitter isn't intuitive. i once wrote a fabulously popular post like 5000 words long explaining how the fuck even basic stuff like reply visibility works. you just learned it because you /had/ to because everyone was here, and you don't /have/ to learn mastodon

i'm so tired of "we need to get the power out of the hands of the corporations! Aah ooh this thing one guy made with 10^-9 of the budget is only 70% as good and i might have to learn 2 new words, how dare the peasants expect me to use this"

And, for the any employees still at Twitter, don’t underestimate the power of a pocket veto. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, or you have to escalate and risk it back firing, but a good pocket veto is a tool to learn to wield well.

The Biomath/CompMed PhD program is a very unique, math/stat/comp heavy program for those interested in methods for bio. It's where I think where most methods students will feel comfortable at UCLA. #MethodsMatter teapawt.net/CompMedUCLA/status/158…

The real threat isn't wokeness. Nor is it centrism. It's fascism, and we need a broad centre/left front to oppose it.

The Prime Minister, Chancellor, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary have abstained or voted against all English abortion legislation since 2015. Others, including the Culture Secretary, Environment Secretary, and Welsh Secretary, have consistently voted against abortion rights.

Elon Musk is making a great case that no billionaire should own social media. The public square, the place for public discourse and discussion should be just that, public. We should own it collectively and profit shouldn't be involved.

The second Musk takes over Twitter the employees are asked to work 84 hour weeks, days off are canceled, and then he lays off half of them. This is why every single worker needs a strong union, across every industry.

THREAD. Two Harvard professors published an academic article calling for 500,000 more armed cops, who they say will arrest 7.8 million more people per year. The article reveals alarming flaws in elite academia at a time of rising fascism. This is one of my most important posts.
