Starting to see ducks arriving for the winter! One of my favorite things about living in Lakeland is (go figure) all the lakes, which means lots of waterfowl. I have to re-learn how to ID most ducks every year, but northern shovelers are hard to forget with that massive bill!

I was lazy this morning so to get me out of the house my bf promised "perfect short-tailed hawk weather", which he always does to get me to go birding & which never actually results in me seeing a short-tailed hawk Well today was in fact perfect short-tailed hawk weather!

These guys have such a small range in the US (one of the perks of living in central FL), and most of the reports I see are from spotting them wayyyy up high riding thermals but this guy cruised right over us only ~20 ft overhead, such a lucky experience

Florida's Archie Carr Natl #WildlifeRefuge is best-known as an important *sea* turtle nesting site. However, *land*-based gopher tortoises occasionally appear there, too. They are a keystone species in the Southeast. More: go.usa.gov/xPPJV Photo: Christine Eastwick/@USFWS
