Someone said Ghana is a reactive country, I fully agree now.

Labadi Beach Hotel, built in 1991 by Ghana's biggest gold mine, is Gh's most prestigious 5-star beach resort. Since SSNIT, the state pension fund & 100% owner, took over mgmt, political insiders have hijacked the beachfront leaving the hotel with just 2 acres. SSNIT is helpless.

What’s surprising about this whole situation is that this transportation challenge has existed since November 2025. You’d think by now a private transport company would have identified the gap as an opportunity to step in provide a solution and gain traction in the market

1. When President John Dramani Mahama appointed Afetsi Awoonor to lead BOST in 2025, the reaction was muted. He was young, drawn from the private sector rather than the political frontline, and handed a state enterprise that had never in its history paid its shareholder a cedi. Some wondered whether a man so young and so unassuming could hold his own in one of Ghana's most contested institutions.
2. Eighteen months later, BOSTenergies has answered for him. Revenue up nearly 200% to GH¢3.81 billion. Profit after tax up 72% to GH¢683.96 million. Equity more than doubled. And, for the first time in thirty-two years, a dividend of GH¢34.2 million paid to the Government of Ghana.
3. The lesson goes beyond one company. Across the President's appointments, a pattern is visible: younger professionals with private-sector discipline being trusted with institutions that older hands had long treated as untouchable. Edmund Kombat of the Tema Oil Refinery is another fine example.
4. BOSTenergies shows what that trust can yield when it is matched with competence, a clear mandate and a thirst for results.
5. Ghana is a young country. Most of its people are under 30, yet its boardrooms and public institutions have too often been reserved for those who have waited their turn rather than those best placed to deliver. The BOSTenergies result is an argument against that habit. Youth is not a substitute for capacity, but where capacity exists, age should never be the reason to withhold responsibility.
6. If one young appointee can turn a thirty-two year drought into a dividend, the case for opening more doors in SOEs, in ministries, and in the boards that oversee them makes itself. The country's next turnaround stories are waiting on the same kind of chance.
