Celebrating a Better Than Imagined future in motion...
Some news: I’ve joined the Board of UCLA’s Cancer Center (@UCLAHealthJCCC). My godfather battled cancer for decades. My mom beat it and my dad is going through it too. It’s a vicious disease… but I truly believe we can beat it in our lifetime. UCLA has long been at the forefront. It’s a public hospital that serves the most diverse, populous county in all of America. UCLA’s Cancer Center discovered the first targeted therapy for breast cancer (impacting millions of women). And it has had 27 FDA approvals since 2017. The Jonsson Center is elite. What gets me so excited is how much more is newly possible thanks to AI. It’s mind-bending to hear Dr. Teitell speak about what we might be able to do… if we collectively care enough! Beating cancer will take human will. That’s why I’m so inspired to put my money and time where my mouth is, and try to contribute whatever I can to bring a cancer-free future forward. AI is going to rock our world, in all sorts of ways… we owe it to ourselves to wield it for the public good too. Please reach out if you’d like to learn how you can get involved. I’d love to help bring the best and brightest together — in sunny Los Angeles — to help the scientists, engineers, doctors, and more at UCLA do the work that might save your loved ones’ lives in the future. DMs open!

Replying to @fidjissimo
@fidjissimo what a journey we have been on since your first day as a PM at Facebook to becoming CEO of Instacart and taking it public. Turning Instacart around in 2 years and leading your teams to deliver 5 straight quarters of profitability in this economy. Bravo.
So excited to be taking Instacart public today! The last two years have been a wild ride, but I’m really proud of the business this team has built, turning us into an enduring and profitable company that delivers a critical service to millions of people.

Creativity is about making meaning from the raw material of the world, using the capacities we have evolved as biological creatures
We've all experienced pareidolia: the tendency to perceive a meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern. Now scientists are investigating how to use this capacity to enhance creativity. In today's Science of Creativity newsletter: anniemurphypaul.substack.com…

5/ Preventable Problem Paradox Any complex organization will over time tend to incentivize problem creation more than problem prevention. This bias leads to a “hero culture”, avoidable blunders & general execution slowness A superb illustration of this bias by @_workchronicles

One of the most satisfying episodes! #creativity #process #energy
I asked @RickRubin whether we need to be happy (or in some other extreme emotion) in order to create. Here he answers what the most important factor is. Find our full discussion about creativity (linked to all formats and timestamped) at: hubermanlab.com

home for the holidays and it’s SO fascinating to see how my 16-year old brother “hangs out” on @discord💻 he is squarely part of this digital-native, covid generation that’s had to adapt to three years of online school. a few interesting ways zoomers ~ chill ~ on discord:

So fun!!!!!!!!
I start a new project by first imagining what would be amazing, and then figuring out if it’s possible. So when my wife and I decided to host a holiday party here in Texas, wouldn’t it be fun to have a sledding hill in the yard? Kids loved it! I got out my snowboard at the end.

Lego and Nintendo have something that's very rare among established companies: a sense of humor. Somehow they've figured out how to prevent it from being crushed by the conformists who usually make up the managerial class.
