I absolutely love this - when standing around having coffee always leave a gap / empty chair to enable someone else to join.

We need both divergent thinking (generating a wide range of views, ideas or possibilities) & convergent thinking (evaluating, comparing & narrowing down choices) if we want to find better solutions. Too often, we leave out the divergent phase altogether or we don't involve enough diverse voices for truly divergent thinking. Diversity & divergent thinking together can make a massive difference to outcomes:

I have realised the real benefit of the hospital accommodation my generation got wasn't so much that it was free (honestly, some of it wasn't worth paying for!). But that we didn't have to stress about finding somewhere to live at short notice.

There is no ‘backstory’ to ending of 2/care @NHSPracHealth other than (we’re told) - no budget. To remind, it was established following suicide of a psychiatry who also killed her baby and highlighted the barriers doctors have in accessing mental health care.

Want to train more resilient doctors?
Don't push them, give them autonomy.
Athletes who have autonomy-supporting coaches are more resilient.
Why?
Because they perceive better satisfaction of basic physiological needs.

NEW: we need to talk about NHS staff retention.
At a time when Britain’s healthcare system is acutely short of workers, *1 in 7* UK-trained doctors are practising overseas. No other developed country is like this, which immediately tells you there’s a problem.

I went outside to top up the chicken feed yesterday afternoon.
We’re usually pretty careful about putting the lid on the food bin, but I figured it had been left off by accident.
I was about to reach in and grab the scoop, but I looked in the bin first…

Advice to others? Relationships are everything.
Building trust with your trainees is critical to succeed. It is won in inches and lost in miles. Work hard to get it and work even harder to keep it.
Work with them, not against them, and try and understand their side of things

Regrettably I will be striking from 0700... in real terms, I earn roughly the same - after 18 years as a consultant - as I did towards end of Registrar training (Band 2A/sometimes Band 3 rotas). Newly appointed consultants on equivalent of not much more than I had as Yr 5 SHO.

Early in my career, I took on extra work w/o compensation or recognition. I’m still offloading some, & some people have had BIG (read: unsolicited) opinions along the way.
Say no to unpaid work that will not benefit you and could be done by someone else.
