Humans excel at #learning and adapting to new circumstances, but what about mice? In our new @PNASNexus paper, we found that every mouse learned a new visual rule in a single session. So: what are the behavioral mechanisms that allow for fast learning? shorturl.at/B9aI7

Science of the day: to find the synaptic gain between two neurons, I use a method developed by @LidorSpivak (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3564…) to de-convolve the auto-correlation from the cross-correlation. Side science: what is your go to method? #Neuroscience #Connectivity

Science of the day: Head direction neurons usually need a decoder to reveal heading. With these raster plots, the heading is clear from the neurons' spiking activity. Side science: although compared to an internal compass, the HD system isn’t tied to magnetic north #Neuroscience

Finally, we suggest a multilevel framework for rule learning as part of a composite learning scheme. We expect the new paradigm and the framework to be useful for deciphering the neuronal mechanisms of rapid discrimination learning requiring reference memory.

Is the hippocampus necessary for non-spatial short-term memory? We developed an automated tactile task for freely-moving mice and silenced CA1 specifically during the memory phase. Want to know how performance is impacted? Check out our new #preprint: shorturl.at/dpFY7

#Hippocampal #theta phase #precession plays a role in spatial coding and neural sequences. Ever wondered how it is generated? New in @sciencemagazine: we show that local circuits can generate precession and propose a potential mechanism: shorturl.at/IOUV9. #ScienceResearch

🌐 Long story short, a precession generator resides locally within CA1! The results are incompatible with models of inheritance, spreading activation, dual-input, inhibition-excitation summation, or somato-dendritic competition and are consistent with a dual-oscillator model. 6/7
