Looking back on my time at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, one change I value most is how the public came to see the sector itself. Environmental protection became a stronger part of conversations about our health, neighbourhoods, livelihoods, and Kano's future. People increasingly joined the work, supported our programmes, and held us accountable. For that, I thank the people of my dear state. This journey began for me on 6 January 2025, when His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Executive Governor of Kano State, entrusted me with the responsibility of leading the Ministry. The challenges were clear. Facilities had deteriorated, policies needed updating, enforcement was weak, and frontline workers were owed outstanding payments. Yet His Excellency saw what the Ministry could become and gave us the support to begin rebuilding it. Our government-owned nurseries tell part of that story. Eight facilities that had become non-functional were fully rehabilitated, restoring our capacity to produce seedlings locally. Building on the administration’s three-million-tree planting programme in 2024, the programme grew to five million in 2025 and ten million in 2026, with all seedlings raised in government-owned nurseries. Behind those numbers was the recovery of public facilities that could continue serving Kano for years to come. The same determination guided the restoration of the Kano State Pollution Control Laboratory. We renovated, equipped, and recommissioned it, giving the State the scientific capacity to test, monitor pollution, and support enforcement. We operationalised the Environmental Pollution Control Law and developed the Environmental Pollution and Waste Control Regulations to give that work a stronger legal foundation. At REMASAB, reforms improved the coordination of waste collection, evacuation, and disposal. Waste management became more organised and responsive, with operations supporting the evacuation of approximately one million metric tonnes of waste. The Dorayi Compost Plant was also brought back into operation, restoring the capacity to turn organic waste into useful compost and creating opportunities for investment. Across flood-prone communities, we undertook drainage construction, clearance and erosion control. The stormwater harvesting intervention in Toranke and work on the Kano State Drainage Master Plan formed part of our effort to move towards better protection and long-term planning. We also restored four public parks, with more underway. Spaces that had suffered neglect were given new management arrangements and a clear responsibility for maintenance. Families now have more welcoming places to spend time together, while the parks’ combined annual revenue increased from around ₦5 million to ₦90 million. Alongside these projects, we rebuilt the policy foundations of the sector. We developed the Kano State Climate Change Policy, its implementation plan and results framework; advanced the Climate Change Bill; and reviewed the Forestry Law after more than five decades. We also developed the Climate Finance Reform Action and Implementation Plan and the Green Bond Framework to prepare Kano for environmental and climate investment. Kano’s third-place finish in the just-concluded 2026 Climate Governance Performance Ranking, and the opportunity to present our work at COP30 in BelΓ©m, Brazil, gave us reasons to be thankful. They also reminded us how far consistent support and collective effort could take the state. None of this work could have continued without the people delivering it every day. With His Excellency’s backing, we cleared nine months of salary arrears for 2,369 verified street sweepers and doubled their stipends, re-engaged inspectors and forest guards, and doubled the stipends of 875 sanitation vanguards. I remain grateful for their service. – at Dakata, Nigeria

WHY NORTHERNERS KEPT QUIET UNDER BUHARI β€” REPLY TO SEN. SHEHU SANI _By Umar Sanda Babuga 1. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari wasn't tribalistic. His two super Ministers (Fashola - Works and Amaechi - Transport) were both Southerners. 2. Northerners kept quiet because while Buhari was rehabilitating Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway, he had completed Ilorin-Bode Saadu-Jebba highway and was undertaking Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. 3. Northerners kept quiet because while Buhari completed ABUJA-Kaduna rail line, he started and completed Lagos-Abeokuta/Ibadan standard gauge railway. 4. While Buhari maintained subsidy making life easier for Nigerians, Tinubu removed it and things have never been the same. That is why northerners kept quiet. 5. Northerners kept quiet because there was school feeding across Nigeria which brought over 5 million out-of-school children (mostly in the North) back to school. 6. Northerners kept quiet because all 36 States had 1 minister each, with only 6 states having 2 (one from each zone), unlike PBAT that gave Ogun state alone 4 Ministers including Finance Minister and CBN Governor. 7. *ON SECURITY & SOPHISTICATED WEAPONS:* Northerners kept quiet because Buhari invested over $1 Billion in weapons to fight insecurity. For the first time since 1999, the Armed Forces were fully re-equipped. - *Air Force:* 38 brand new aircraft β€” 12 A-29 Super Tucano Jets from USA, 3 JF-17 Thunder Jets, 5 Mi-35M attack Helicopters, 4 Agusta 109, 2 Bell 412, 2 Mi-171E, 10 Super Mushshak. Plus he ordered 12 AH-1Z Viper β€” world's deadliest attack helicopter β€” and 24 M-346 attack jets. He also raised aircraft serviceability from 35% to 70%. - *Army:* VT-4 Main Battle Tanks, ST1 Light Tanks, SH-5 Self-propelled Howitzers, and hundreds of Armoured Vehicles. - *Navy:* Over 400 new platforms β€” 200 Riverine Patrol Boats, 114 Rigid Inflatable Boats, 4 Capital Ships, and Surveillance Drones. Because of this, Boko Haram deaths dropped by 92% (from 2,131 in 2015 to 178 in 2021) and Nigeria recorded lowest piracy in 27 years. 8. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari ensured we eat what we produce. That policy created hundreds of rice mills, farmers were happy, our GDP improved since agriculture contributes nearly 40% of GDP, unlike PBAT who gave 150-day duty-free waiver to import food. 9. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari's appointments were across the 6 geopolitical zones, unlike PBAT who takes almost everything to South West. 10. Northerners kept quiet under Buhari because there was NPower, Conditional Cash Transfer, TraderMoni, MarketMoni, FarmerMoni. But PBAT increased school fees from N50,000 to N150,000, gives you loan and expects repayment. 11. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari gave the judiciary and opposition a free hand to operate, that cannot be said under this government. 12. Northerners kept quiet because the economic team was under South West under Buhari (Osinbajo, Kemi Adeosun, Babatunde Fowler etc). Now everything is concentrated in South West. 13. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari completed Second Niger Bridge after 50 years of failed promises β€” a project in South East, not North. 14. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari recovered 20 Local Governments from Boko Haram. In 2015 Boko Haram controlled 20 LGs and hoisted flags. By 2017, no inch of Nigeria was under them. 15. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari built 14 new Federal Universities and completed 5 International Airport Terminals β€” Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, Enugu β€” not one zone. 16. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari signed Petroleum Industry Act after 20 years of failure, and started 614km AKK Gas Pipeline to revive Northern industries. 17. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari exited Nigeria from recession TWICE (2017 & 2021) and gave bailout to all 36 States to pay salaries without minding APC or PDP. 18. Northerners kept quiet because Buhari gave LG Autonomy and signed Not-Too-Young-To-Run Bill.

As we remember Sultan Muhammadu Maccido, the 19th Sultan of Sokoto, twenty years after his passing, we are reminded of the importance of religious tolerance, dialogue and peaceful coexistence. His commitment to unity and service remains a lesson for leaders and citizens alike as Nigeria continues to navigate its challenges. Twenty years on, his family asks us for two things. 1. Choose talk over fight. Unity over division. 2. Take air safety seriously, so we never lose so many again. His best memorial is how we live, not stone and speeches. May his legacy continue to inspire generations. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen. 🀲 #SultanMaccidoAt20 #TheManOfPeace
