Thankful for an exciting, empowering two days of professional learning alongside @apsupdate educators 🧑🏫. Armed with new understandings about how the science of reading impacts secondary readers, we examined new ELA standards to imagine responsive approaches to complex texts. 📚✔️ @JSerravallo
Middle School ELA! @CatoosaSchools Teachers were in the midst of a dystopian short stories unit 😳 focusing on identifying theme. We chose not to replace original texts w/ abridged versions, but instead offered supportive and scaffolded oral readings of complex texts to tee up complex thinking. We gave readers copies of short texts 📖, and took away the 💻 to support deep comprehension 🧠. Teachers could quickly peer into student thinking via stop and jots 🗒️ and planned instructional next steps! @JSerravallo

The researchers estimated: If a student spends 10 hours reading in print in their free time, their ability to comprehend will likely be six to eight times higher than if they read on digital devices for the same amount of time. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.… (6/8)

This is a cautionary tale. Throwing out one curriculum and swapping it in for a new one is not it. Leaders....are you listening?

This is important reading for all us as we consider evidence-based practices in our classrooms. Teacher expertise matters and being able to respond -- in the moment -- matters. This resource helps us do that very thing.

What tool helps with reading, writing, small groups, conferring and whole class instruction? Read Aloud! @darvictory and I loved planning powerful Read Alouds to launch the year with @glynncoschools teachers! @JSerravallo
I ❤️ summer PD! W/o the hustle and bustle of the school year, teachers can slow down, reflect and (re)imagine next year's curriculum. A lot of discussion and data diving led to smart, engaging, jointly created writing units to kick off the next school year! @JSerravallo
