"So much of art making is a deliberate set of decisions. At every point, when it comes time to decide one thing or another, you're left wondering: is this decision important to the story I'm trying to tell, or is it not important?" โLars Wander (@larswander)

A Hamburg-born, New Yorkโbased artist with a background in software engineering, @larswander relies on the computerโs processing power and aesthetics to explore the role of computation in the understanding of our physical world and our relationship to it, the divide between observation and interaction, the existence of an abstract space of all possibilities and how its distribution of outcomes steers reality, and lastly the role of entropy in our ability to observe and make sense of the world.
His works examine how systems of logic and computation can become vehicles for perception, and how perception itself is never neutral. Beyond the technical precision lies a deeper curiosity: Wander is fascinated by how our ways of seeing are shaped by language, culture, and collective habits of thought. In his works, both generative and physical, colour, form, and light are not just physical phenomena but cultural ones.

Once, someone asked Willem de Kooning why his paintings were still sticky after all these years. He blushed and replied that he had added mayonnaise to the paint. Later, scientists tested the surface โ there was no mayo โ so the stickiness remained a mystery.
Lars Wanderโs approach to colour mixing, by contrast, is transparent: his colours are generated โvia KubelkaโMunk theory, using spectral coefficients derived from Golden Heavy Body Acrylics and computed/provided by the lab of Roy Berns.โ

Think this was the start of my daily gm posts.
I've seen more art in the last 3 years than many do in a lifetime and for that I'm grateful.
Proud that this @larswander piece on @fx_hash_ was the beginning.

I find myself more and more interested in computer art the further I continue to read and connect with artists on their practice and explorations. Excited to continue sharing my conversations, questions, and discoveries with you all. I truly believe there is nothing more impactful than the act of storytelling via art and through text.
