LASUCOM Secures Africa-Europe Innovation Platform Public Health Challenge Award The collaborative partnership between the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Gaiasoft International, United Kingdom, has been selected as *one of three* winning Africa-Europe partnerships in the 2026 Africa-Europe Innovation Platform (AEIP) Public Health Thematic Challenge. The LASUCOM/LASUTH-Gaiasoft Challenge winning innovation, TRAC, is an AI-assisted trauma intelligence platform designed to transform routine emergency-care documentation into structured, clinician-verified data. The initiative, led by the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, alongside the United Kingdom delivery lead, Geraldine Bandari, brings together expertise from clinical medicine, trauma and emergency care, research, digital transformation and artificial intelligence to address critical challenges in trauma care and health-system intelligence. The platform is intended to support healthcare professionals and health systems by improving referrals, care coordination, trauma surveillance and service planning, while also helping to identify gaps and inequalities in access to trauma care. By combining LASUCOM/LASUTH's clinical and research expertise in trauma and emergency care with Gaiasoft's capabilities in artificial intelligence, medical natural language processing, digital transformation, secure cloud architecture, health-data interoperability, monitoring and evaluation, the partnership seeks to develop a solution capable of translating frontline clinical information into actionable intelligence. The recognition represents an important milestone for LASUCOM and LASUTH, placing the institutions within a distinguished Africa-Europe innovation network and demonstrating the potential of their clinical, academic and research capabilities to contribute to globally relevant health solutions. It also highlights the value of partnerships that bring together academic institutions, teaching hospitals and technology organisations to address complex healthcare challenges. For LASUCOM and LASUTH, the TRAC project provides an opportunity to strengthen the intersection between clinical practice, research, digital health and artificial intelligence, while contributing to the broader global conversation around the use of technology to improve health-system performance and patient care. The success further reflects the commitment of the multidisciplinary teams involved and underscores the importance of cross-sector and cross-continental collaboration in developing scalable solutions to pressing public health challenges. Through TRAC, the LASUCOM/LASUTH-Gaiasoft partnership is poised to contribute to a more data-informed approach to trauma care, while demonstrating how African-European innovation partnerships can translate local healthcare challenges into solutions with wider global relevance.

LASG HANDS OVER UPGRADED FACILITY IN YABA TO LASUCOM FOR FACULTY OF PHARMACY Lagos State Government has officially handed over the upgraded facility at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Yaba, to the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) to house its Faculty of Pharmacy. The handover ceremony held yesterday, Tuesday, October 6, 2026, exactly one year after a Lagos State delegation inspected the project to expand the College through the establishment of satellite campuses at Yaba and Gbagada. It will be recalled that on October 10, 2025, the delegation comprising the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, inspected the projects aimed at enhancing the College’s capacity. With the completion of the Yaba project, the facility is now ready to serve as the academic base for the Faculty of Pharmacy. Speaking at the brief handover ceremony, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, noted that the upgraded facilities and expansion of LASUCOM’s educational infrastructure would enhance the State’s capacity to train more healthcare professionals to meet public health needs. Prof. Abayomi commended the supervising agency, the Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), and the project contractor for delivering the project on time and in line with the standards and guidelines of the state government. He noted that the deficit in the health sector is largely due to the “Japa syndrome” and the underproduction of health professionals. According to him, to address the challenge, the Lagos State Government has adopted a strategy of producing more healthcare professionals and attracting those who have left Nigeria to return, thereby turning brain drain to brain gain. “This can be achieved by providing more facilities and disciplines for them to come back to with the skills they have acquired,” he said. In his remarks, the Provost of the College, Prof. Olufemi Idowu, thanked the Commissioner for Health and by extension, the Lagos State Government, for its continuous support and oversight. He described the handover as a significant milestone in the growth of the College, stating that the completion of the Yaba facility would directly expand capacity for pharmacy education and strengthen the academic platform for future cohorts of students. Prof. Idowu assured the government that the College would work towards ensuring smooth integration of the Faculty into the new environment. With the Yaba project now completed and work on the Gbagada satellite campus progressing, the College is expected to improve accessibility, reduce pressure on existing lecture and laboratory spaces, and provide a stronger learning environment for students and staff.

My Dear LASU Family, I write to you for the last time as the 9th Substantive Vice-Chancellor and the second female Vice-Chancellor of our great University. Today, I close a chapter of my life that has been one of the most defining of my career, not because it gave me any personal accomplishment to boast about, but because it gave me the greatest platform I have ever had to serve, contribute and make an impact on people and an institution that mean so much to me. I remember with vivid clarity the morning of 16 September 2021, when I received the call informing me of my appointment as Vice-Chancellor. Four days later, I assumed office with a clear vision and the conviction that, working together, the LASU community would achieve great things. Even so, I could not have imagined the scale of transformation that LASU would experience over the next five years. We watched our programmes go through accreditation, established new faculties and schools, expanded our academic offerings, transformed our systems digitally, expanded our infrastructure and strengthened the University's financial capacity. We saw our students excel in sports and academics, our researchers secure grants, new partnerships emerge and LASU gain greater visibility on the global academic map. We also celebrated when, for two consecutive years, LASU emerged as the most preferred university in the country. These achievements did not happen because of one person. They happened because thousands of people believed that LASU could be better and were willing to contribute to making it so. The journey was not without difficult moments. There were disruptions, disappointments, difficult decisions and difficult conversations. But those moments are also part of the story. And I believe we can say with confidence that LASU is in a better place today than it was five years ago. For that, I am profoundly grateful. First, I give all glory to the Almighty God, who gave me the strength, wisdom and grace to begin this journey and, most importantly, to see it through. To Him alone be all the glory. I am deeply grateful to the Government and people of Lagos State, under the leadership of His Excellency, Mr Babajide Olusola SANWO-OLU, for the confidence reposed in me and the support given to this University throughout my tenure. I am equally grateful to the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff and student Unions, alumni, development partners, friends of the University and every stakeholder in the LASU project. And to every member of the LASU family, I say thank you. Every achievement recorded during these five years belongs, in one way or another, to you. You made it happen through your prayers, support, sacrifices, dedication and hard work. You taught me, challenged me, supported me and, at different moments, reminded me that leadership is ultimately about people. I will always remember your commitment, resilience and the countless ways you gave of yourselves to make this University better. What a journey it's been. But no matter how remarkable, every journey has a beginning and, inevitably, an end. I leave knowing that I did my part and gave my best to make LASU stronger, greater and better prepared for the future. But the work is not finished. The work of building LASU is a continuing responsibility. The baton simply passes from one set of hands to another. I leave with confidence in the future of this great University and with the abiding belief that the best days of LASU are still ahead. As I take my leave, I ask that you continue to protect what we have built, continue to believe in this institution and continue to give your very best to it. May you continue to make LASU proud. May LASU continue to rise. Long live Lagos State University. Long live Lagos State. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are LASU, We are Great! Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM 9th Substantive Vice-Chancellor

LASUCOM Receives Major Research Boost as VC Commissions Laboratory Facilities Donated by UK-Based Don On Tuesday 15th September, 2026, LASUCOM received a significant boost to its training and research capacity as the Vice Chancellor of LASU, Distinguished Prof. Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji Bello (mni, NPOM) commissioned donated laboratory facilities from the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences, @UniWestLondon by UK Based Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Prof. Bernadine Idowu-Onibokun. Commending the sponsor, the Vice-Chancellor described the gesture as a “kind and thoughtful” contribution to the College, noting that it reflected the importance of giving back to institutions and communities at home after achieving professional success abroad. “It is one thing to achieve success abroad and it is another to deliberately give back to your home and support institutions here,” Prof. Olatunji-Bello declared with an aura of genuine admiration for the donor’s commitment to giving back and advancing education at home. She described the equipment as more than a material donation, stressing that it represented an investment in the medical and clinical training of future medical professionals and encouraged the College to ensure that the equipment was properly managed and maintained for sustained use by students and researchers. Prof. Bernadine Idowu-Onibokun, whose academic career spans biomedical sciences, research and higher education, also used the occasion to challenge students to think beyond obtaining a degree and begin to consider the possibilities that their education could create. In her inspirational lecture, titled “Beyond the Degree: Building Your Career, Creating Opportunities and Making an Impact,” she shared aspects of her personal and professional journey, explaining that her path to becoming a Professor was shaped by opportunities, supportive people and her willingness to embrace opportunities when they came. She urged the students to deliberately build relationships, find mentors, embrace opportunities that challenge them and eventually become mentors, opportunity creators themselves and further encouraged them to build not only careers but lasting legacies, urging them to use their education and professional journeys to contribute to society. Her engagement with the students also reflected her advocacy for greater visibility, mentoring and opportunities for Black talent in biomedical sciences. She noted her involvement in the Black in Biomedical Sciences initiative, established to inspire Black students to pursue biomedical science and postgraduate studies while providing networks, work experience, mentoring and coaching opportunities. For LASUCOM, the donation is expected to strengthen practical medical training and research, while the Professor’s engagement with students provided an opportunity for them to gain insight into career possibilities, professional development and the responsibility to give back to society. – at Ikeja, Nigeria

IDOWU TAKES STOCK OF TENURE, ENGAGES STAFF ON LASUCOM'S NEXT CHAPTER The Provost of the College, Prof. Olufemi E. Idowu, on Monday 14th September 2026 met separately with Academic and Non-Academic Staff as his administration enters the final months of his tenure, providing an opportunity to reflect on the journey so far and outline the priorities for the College’s next chapter. The meetings centered on the progress recorded under the Idowu led PAC administration, provided an opportunity for the Provost to engage with staff while reflecting on some of the initiatives, improvements and the work that remains ahead as the College continues its pursuit of institutional growth and excellence. Reflecting on the journey so far, Professor Idowu said his administration began its tenure with a clear understanding of both the opportunities and gaps before the College, noting that while LASUCOM had strong foundations and considerable potential, there were pressing issues that required deliberate and decisive attention. “When we assumed responsibility for LASUCOM, we were taking charge of an institution with remarkable strengths, but also one facing real concerns that demanded our immediate attention,” he stated Against this backdrop, the Provost said the administration adopted the PAC Agenda, People, Access and Commitment to Excellence, as its guide to action, with the objective of placing staff and students at the centre of decision-making, expanding opportunities and connectivity through digital transformation, and strengthening systems and standards across the College. “People are our strength, Access is our pathway and Excellence is our commitment,” the Provost proudly stated, reaffirming the principles that have defined the administration’s 21-month journey as he highlighted improvements in student welfare, including the rehabilitation of all three College hostels, additional bed spaces, new beds and mattresses, and solar power. He also cited key digital transformation initiatives, including Starlink connectivity, strengthened internet services, an upgraded website and a teleconference facility, alongside the expansion of the College from four to six faculties with over 32 departments and programmes. In research, the administration established and registered the Health Research Ethics Committee, which has reviewed over 250 protocols, as well as the Research Grant Development and Management Office and Clinical Trials Unit. As staff members raised questions, particularly on upcoming programme accreditations and other operational and administrative matters, Professor Idowu outlined additional need to consolidate the College’s expansion, deepen digital transformation, expand partnerships and internally generated revenue while highlighting the need to sustain these gains and complete outstanding initiatives. As his administration approaches the end of its tenure in December, Professor Idowu expressed appreciation to the College community, including Deans and Heads of Department, professors and academic staff, clinicians, administrators, laboratory technical and support staff, and students, recognising their collective role in the College’s progress. This engagement with staff therefore served not only as a review of what has been achieved, but also as a moment to reflect on the responsibility of sustaining the gains made and advancing the work that remains As Professor Idowu stated in his closing message, “Together, we can take LASUCOM further than we found it,” signalling a transition that looks beyond the conclusion of one administration towards the continued growth and development of the College. – at Ikeja, Nigeria

LASUCOM Holds Safety and Vigilance Workshop for Security Personnels The Security Unit of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) kicked off a two-day training programme on Friday 11th September 2026 for its personnel, themed “Professionalism, Vigilance and Safety in Tertiary Institutions.” The training aimed at strengthening the capacity of security personnel and equipping them with practical knowledge and skills required to effectively respond to security and safety situations within the College. Declaring the training open, The Provost of the College Prof. Olufemi Idowu reminded the officers that they occupy a critical position in the daily life of the institution, often serving as the first point of contact in situations requiring vigilance, sound judgement and a prompt response. He stressed that the changing nature of security demands continuous learning and professional development, urging the personnel to approach the training not merely as a routine exercise but as an opportunity to sharpen their skills and strengthen their readiness for duty. "Security is not simply about standing at a gate or watching over a facility but also about vigilance, discipline, judgement and the ability to respond appropriately when it matters most,” he said. The programme covers key areas including access control and surveillance, emergency response and fire safety, customer service and conflict resolution, report writing, CCTV surveillance, observation and vigilance, as well as supervisory and leadership skills. Goodwill messages from the College Secretary, Ms. Ayomipo Fagbenro and Financial Controller, Dr. (Mrs.) Oyende also echoed the Provost's sentiment on the responsibilities of the Security Unit reaching beyond the conventional task of guarding facilities, describing them as an essential part of the College’s wider duty-of-care system. The sessions are expected to focus on broad areas of security and safety like access control, emergency response, fire safety, customer service, conflictw resolution, investigations, report writing, CCTV surveillance, observation, supervisory and leadership skills. The programme is scheduled to end on Saturday, 12th September 2026 as part of efforts to promote a more professional, vigilant and effective approach to security and safety within the College. Through this yearly capacity-building initiative, LASUCOM continues to demonstrate its steadfast resolve to maintaining a safe and conducive teaching, learning, working and visiting environment for staff, students and visitors in the College. – at Ikeja, Nigeria

We sincerely appreciate your most distinguished prescence at our Campus, Honorable Commissioner The transformation of Blue Hostel is a testament to what purposeful investment, quality infrastructure and a clear vision for the future of healthcare can achieve. LASUCOM is extremely proud to be a beneficiary of this strategic investment and remains committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals who will serve Lagos State.
At LASUCOM, we commissioned the renovated Blue Hostel, but what we are really investing in is the future of healthcare in Lagos. The hostel was originally built for 48 occupants. By September 2025, it was housing 195 students. When work began, we discovered structural defects in the columns, beams, and slabs. Rather than apply a cosmetic fix, we undertook the structural intervention required to make the building safe, functional and fit for purpose. Today, the facility can accommodate 292 students, with 247 solar-powered lights, 15,000 litres of water storage with filtration, USB power sockets, improved ventilation and modernised living spaces. The speed of delivery is also worth noting. Architectural drawings began in September 2025. Structural testing and repairs followed, with civil works, finishing and post-construction testing completed ahead of today’s commissioning. But Blue Hostel sits within a much broader strategy. Lagos faces a serious shortage of healthcare professionals. We cannot solve this by increasing admissions alone. We must expand the entire ecosystem that trains them: classrooms, laboratories, accommodation, clinical training sites and hospitals. That is why we are expanding teaching and laboratory capacity, refurbishing general hospitals and PHCs to support decentralised training, developing new specialist hospitals, deploying digital health through SHIP, and preparing for LASUCOM’s transformation into the Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences. We are also pursuing healthcare financing reforms because a stronger health system requires a sustainable economic foundation. We want to create an environment that attracts talent, strengthens training and makes advanced healthcare increasingly available in Lagos. This is how we build the capacity of Lagos to become a major centre for medical training and healthcare excellence in West Africa and beyond. To our students and the LASUCOM community: The government has made this investment. Your responsibility is to protect and maintain it, and to leave it better for those who come after you. We are building tomorrow’s health system, one piece at a time. #medicaleducation #lasucom #lasuth

LASUCOM Rounds Up "NUC-Standard" Mock Accreditation Exercise for Seven Academic Programmes As LASUCOM counts down to the NUC Accreditation assessment for Seven (7) of its programmes holding later this year, the Vice-Chancellor's Standing Resource Assessment Committee returned to the College on Tuesday 8th September, 2026 for a final mock exercise to assess the level of compliance with the recommendations made during its first visit and evaluate the progress achieved. This follow up exercise also provided an opportunity for the committee to reengage with the concerned faculty members, departmental representatives and staff, identify new areas requiring improvement according to the NUC guidelines and make recommendations aimed at strengthening the College's readiness. The seven (7) LASUCOM programmes scheduled for accreditation are Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiography and Medical Laboratory Science which are seeking initial accreditation, while Physiology, Nursing and Pharmacology are undergoing reaccreditation. The accreditation team was received by the Provost, Professor Olufemi Idowu, who welcomed and ushered the team into the commencement of the exercise, assuring them of the College Management and Staff's full support towards ensuring a seamless accreditation process. The assessment, like the initial visit, focused on review of academic and administrative documents some of which include staff nominal rolls, course summaries, marking schemes, academic calendars, library holdings, laboratory equipment and departmental records. The committee also requested detailed information on the College’s lecture halls, including their names, locations, seating capacities, and availability, as part of the resource assessment to review the adequacy of the facilities in relation to the student population and assess the extent to which the available lecture spaces support effective teaching and learning across the programmes under review. The conclusion of this mock exercise underscores the University and LASUCOM’s readiness for the NUC accreditation visit later in the year, with the College poised to build on the gains recorded, address identified gaps and present its programmes, facilities and academic resources for a successful accreditation outcome.
