What is this extremely mysterious neuron that set mechinterp going on a dead end for the last 3 years? It's literally </\> kiki ? or bouba o0o
interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/

anon, will you come practice fpv warfare 3pm saturday at my place, or are you resigned to trench digging class?
Ukrainian-developed FPV drone simulator “Remote Reaper: FPV Drone” has officially left Early Access, with version 1.0 now available on Steam. Developed in collaboration with military pilots, the simulator focuses on combat FPV drone operations and introduces several features in its full release, including armored vehicles with modeled vulnerable zones, electronic warfare effects that can disrupt video feeds and control signals during the final stage of an attack, and a customizable drone editor. Version 1.0 also adds configurable weather conditions, custom mission editing, real-time flights with other pilots and a racing mode. Players can use FPV hardware or a gamepad with realistic flight physics, or opt for simplified controls using a keyboard and mouse. #RemoteReaper #FPV #FPVDrone #DroneSimulator

hypomania is underdescribed despite being one of the most powerful states your mind can enter. what exists is filled with naive pathologizing and off-label generalizations from bipolar 1 (true mania, psychosis, genuinely dangerous) people admit to using this state in private. but if you bring this to a mental health worker they'll send you to a psychiatrist and the psychiatrist will try and put you on antipsychotics yet it's possible to harness it to wonderful ends, and to trigger/sustain with minimal or no substance use i really hope more writing is published on it
What I actually want to write, that has been bouncing around my brain and turning infuriatingly slippery every time I try to grab it, is an account of the experience of hypomania. It is maybe the second most meaningful drug-free state I have ever known, only surpassed by grief, and lists of symptoms - while correct - do not do it justice. "Feeling intensively driven", what you mean is hypomania opened all the doors in me. it removed all the walls. suddenly I was dropped in the world, born anew, and there was a motor in my belly vroombing "go go go", no fear, no filters, just an urge to act upon reality and have reality act upon me. Music stopped being a pleasure because it competed with the euphoria of thinking. Wikipedia tells you about undersleeping but it doesn't approach the feeling of lying in bed with your brain going a thousand miles an hour and it feeling so *good*. If you've ever taken stimulants - nope, that doesn't come close. Stimulants are to hypomania what directions are to true knowledge of the territory: directions let you get to your destination as long as you keep them in mind and you don't veer off course, but hypomania is utter freedom, the ability to choose where to go and how, update on information, change your mind yet still make it without a shadow of a doubt in your ability to. I remain convinced that your hyper-achievers are those lucky enough to have been born in that state (or a more sustainable variant of it). I write about it like a witch crafting a summoning spell. It may be true to say that everything I throw at my work capacity - the pomodoros, the (legal!) drugs, the time-tracking, the coaching - is an attempt to trigger hypomania. I push the creaky gates of my mind hoping if I keep going they'll swing open and I'll be free again. But I don't push very hard, because outside hypomania I am so hobbled! So many fears! But I know, because I've lived it, that there is a different state available to me. And every insecurity I overcome feels like completing a side quest from a finite list. Soon I will have ticked them all done, and there will only be the real thing left. And maybe then I'll write that damn blog post about it.
