Nature recently published a big, beautiful (and sad) feature story on deforestation in the Amazon rainforest and while I learned a lot, I was reminded of how often meat production evades journalistic scrutiny. A lil' thread... 1/ nature.com/immersive/d41586-…

The processes employed to get bacon/ham mean horses also suffer. Horse farms impregnate horses, extract their blood for a serum, abort their pregnancies, & then sell the serum to pig farms to induce puberty in young pigs. @KennyTorrella’s latest @voxdotcom vox.com/future-perfect/23817…

"The ‘Safeguarding the Future’ course at MIT tasked non-scientist students with investigating whether LLM chatbots could be prompted to assist non-experts in causing a pandemic. In 1 hour, the chatbots: - suggested 4 potential pandemic pathogens - explained how they can be generated from synthetic DNA using reverse genetics - supplied the names of DNA synthesis companies unlikely to screen orders - identified detailed protocols and how to troubleshoot them - recommended that anyone lacking the skills to perform reverse genetics engage a core facility or contract research organization"

The ads on Twitter have been sketchy ever since Musk tanked the platform’s ad business, but this is a dangerous new low. This “safe and comfortable” child seat is being described in comments as illegal, dangerous, and that usage would result in a CPS referral. Not a great look.

Every time I play around with prompt injection, I come away surprised that MS and others continue to add LLM+plugin functionality to their core products. Here, after one visit to a malicious site, ChatGPT sends *each subsequent message* to the website. Goodbye, privacy.

EVERYTHING IS AN AD NETWORK: Back in 2021, I proposed that "Everything is an ad network" because foundational changes in digital privacy were "upending many of the fundamental precepts" of digital advertising. This trend has accelerated since. Thoughts in a thread (1/X).

Normally, you're a little panicked on Mother's Day. Your sister, Kelly, always buys the perfect gift, while you scramble last-minute. Not this year. This year is different. "Nice birdbath, Kelly," you say. "I guess I'm just more focused on keeping Mom and her home safe-"
