Having already committed $1.2 billion dollars, including hundreds of millions from the state General Fund, to build one new prison, Alabama is now looking for $$ to build another. Let's chat about budgets & funding for the criminal legal system. Pull up a chair. 1/ #alpolitics
The timeline for constructing a second large men's prison in Alabama remains uncertain as state leaders seek additional funding, with Gov. Kay Ivey committed to the project despite current financial shortfalls. #ALPolitics buff.ly/4dDU0WW

When @J_Palombi was first diagnosed with kidney failure, men on Alabama's death row volunteered to donate theirs. He was a brilliant litigator who made a hell of a sourdough loaf and he's probably haunting Alito as we speak. RIP to a real one. dignitymemorial.com/obituari…

"If Mr. Myers is executed, it will show we are more afraid to reckon w our past, where a Klan sympathizer could represent a Black man on trial for his life & an elected judge could override the will of a jury, than to do the hard but necessary work of reconciliation." #alpolitics
A former juror is calling on Gov. Kay Ivey to grant clemency to Robin “Rocky” Myers, citing his wrongful conviction, ineffective legal representation, and the now-illegal judicial override that sentenced him to death. #ALPolitics buff.ly/4gMzGE6

Gov. Kay Ivey has the power to grant Rocky clemency and there is every reason to do so. He has a son and grandchildren who love him and who he loves. His quality of life in prison would be terrible, but it would be a life.

If you live in Ala., pls call on Kay Ivey to do the right thing. The only power she has is to convert Rocky's sentence to life w/o parole. Please call or write to her to ask. Cite Ms. Pucket's article! And please respect the fact that calls are more impactful if you are civil.

I visited with @_ryancagle the day after election day for a very specific reason: I wanted to spend that awful day w someone who rejects cynicism & chooses to love & pour into his neighbors. It worked as an antidote to my own despair. Via @oxfordamerican #harmreduction
“This is, to me, a way we practice resurrection in a very literal, material way,” he said of his ministry. “It’s a way to love our neighbor, because our community is literally on fire with this crisis.” Fascinating & riveting #MustRead by @leahanelson. bit.ly/3DNKow9

In Parrish, Alabama, a Narcan vending machine tells a bigger story. For our latest web feature, @leahanelson examines the opioid crisis through the eyes of a harm reduction activist, case manager, and truck stop workers. 🔗 oxfordamerican.org/oa-now/th…

In a postage stamp of a town at the southernmost tip of Appalachia, a minister/self-described anarcho-communist operates Alabama’s only (for now) Narcan vending machine. And that is also what Alabama is like.

IDK the results tonight yet but I just plead with everyone: PLEASE don't say racist stuff about any group that didn't vote the way you wanted them to.
Just saw a Democratic political strategist blame the fact that black voters in Wisconsin are breaking for Trump on illiteracy. If Trump does end up getting anything close to the share of black voters that polls predicted, libs about to get real racist real quick. Ditto for Arabs.

As I cast my vote in Montgomery, Alabama I especially thought of all of the civil rights activists who fought for freedom and democracy. Let’s do right by them and make them proud.
