Polls open at 6 a.m. in Westchester County on Election Day, and within minutes the ballot scanners at polling places across the entire county start rejecting ballots, and now the Board of Elections wants you to believe the problem is… the paper. The thickness of the paper. That is their answer, and County Executive Ken Jenkins said this morning there was no word on when it would be fixed.
So let me ask the obvious question. How do you print ballots for an entire county, test the machines, certify them, hand everything to poll workers, and nobody notices the paper doesn't work in the machine until the morning of the election? Who ordered the paper? Who tested it? Who signed off? Somebody did, and somebody has a name.
Here is the reality. Westchester sits right in the middle of a closely watched House race, Mike Lawler against Cait Conley in the 17th, the early vote is already banked, and now the Election Day vote, the day Republicans typically show up in bigger numbers, is going into orange emergency bags to be counted later. Lara said it plainly… front load the early voting and then choke the line on Election Day. I am not going to tell you every glitch is a plot, but I have watched these "glitches" for years and they never seem to cost the people running the system anything, and they always seem to land on the voters who show up in person.
And now you are supposed to trust that every one of those bagged ballots gets handled, secured and counted right by the same board that couldn't figure out its own paper. Letitia James says her office is monitoring. Feel better? Me neither.
Make no mistake, this is exactly why paper, hand counts and real chain of custody matter, because the minute the machine breaks you find out real fast who actually controls your vote… and it isn't you.
Westchester, do not leave that line. Vote, watch your ballot go into that bag, and if you see something, document it and report it. Poll watchers, stay on those bags until the last one is counted in front of you.
