Your cells divide throughout your life and each division can shorten the telomeres at the ends of your chromosomes. Think of telomeres as protective caps: when they become too short a cell may stop dividing or enter senescence. Telomere attrition is recognised as one of the hallmarks of ageing. Telomerase is an enzyme that helps maintain telomeres. It’s active in certain cells but has low activity in many ordinary body cells. Epithalon is a synthetic four amino acid peptide studied for its possible effect on this system. In a human cell culture study researchers reported increased telomerase activity and longer telomeres after treating fibroblasts with Epithalon.
