Great energy tonight! Got to talk about lab automation, recent advances in bio foundation models and parenting in with some new and familiar faces. Biotech and AI is alive and well in NYC. Hope to make this a recurring meetup at @fractaltechnyc
biotech-ml meetup on feb 11th in williamsburg!!! come!!! only a few spots left!!! quickly!!!!

The flourishing is K shaped
AI IS AMAZING I know it's hip to worry about the decline in book reading and how chatbots will impoverish our brains. But TBH, this is not at all what I see. I wrote about how we're in this wild moment for intellectual flourishing and how all of us are the children of dancers.

Some people seem to attract software bugs- has anyone looked into that?

Why do science book publishers do this?

Biosecurity global infra.
Beam is now available across platforms, with open weights under the Apache 2.0 license - in collaboration with an ecosystem of 40+ partners. We're releasing: - Weights, tokenizer, and reference implementation - BF16, FP8 and NVFP4 weights and a DFlash2 drafter - The open source harness we built and trained Beam on: Mirror CLI Weights and model card on Hugging Face: huggingface.co/reflection

I think we have a problem

Lots of interest in biothreat radar lately, I wonder why
Great panel yesterday at FP's Health Forum with Bob Kristovich (DTRA) and Jane Halton (CEPI), moderated by @NPRKelly. We need for biosecurity what every other domain of defense already has: persistent, proactive technical monitoring, deployed everywhere. That's Biothreat Radar.

Real biosecurity is terraforming Mars
Replying to @erika_alden_d
The first microbe for Mars is a safe, useful first step toward terraforming. Read the announcement from @Pioneer__Labs, including links to three new papers: blog.pioneer-labs.org/p/anno…

Ginkgo Computational Biologist @RoryKirchner noticed that the broker schedule for our autonomous lab, Nebula, looked like music production software. So naturally he turned all of the lab instruments into MIDI instruments. The result is the first ever musical track made by an autonomous lab. Introducing… DJ Nebula.

It’s clear to me now that the Knicks winning a title finally broke the simulation

I get and agree with the argument at AI will lift prevention and cures as well as threats, but covid showed us already that - even with warp speed development- this is not symmetric and it lands in favor of threats

Correct take- most predictions will be wrong, but what matters is how exponential growth amplifies tail risk. We need harm reduction on every available axis.
(1/2) re: experts disagreeing about Anthropic report... Of course they do... We are on an exponential curve of technical change in both bioengineering and AI - accurate predictions of what will be done are impossible Please just read @waitbutwhy from 2015 science.org/content/article/…
