James Clerk Maxwell is celebrated for his contributions to electromagnetic equations, but few know he pioneered color photography. Using a three-color filter method (red, green, blue), he theorized that combining monochrome images taken through these filters could reproduce color. Although physicist Thomas Sutton took the actual photo of a tartan ribbon, Maxwell presented the result in 1861—decades before color photography became practical.

Four of the 25 St Andrews calotypes by Hill and Adamson discovered at the Signet Library this morning. No entirely unknown images, but high quality prints well-preserved.

The Old Cornish Accent: This video is a wonderful view into the old Cornish accent and spirit. This fascinating interview of 77 year old Cornish maid Emanda Billings in 1964 is a great insight into the everyday life of our recent ancestors. She was born in Victorian England (1800s), a world in which we've lost all connection. The Cornish accent (also called Anglo-Cornish or Cornu-English) developed as local Celtic speakers shifted to English between 1300 and 1750, adopting regional West Country English while keeping a strong Brittonic language substrate. ⏳️

Somewhat later than intended, here's our long-standing start to #SundayMorning. This is "Sunday Morning, Farringdon Road" by Cecil Osborne from 1929. It is in the collection at Brighton & Hove Museum where it is currently on display until 2027. #CecilOsborne #EastLondonGroup
