We're releasing a preview of OpenAI o1—a new series of AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. These models can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math. openai.com/index/introducing…

here is o1, a series of our most capable and aligned models yet: openai.com/index/learning-to… o1 is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.

Bugs are unavoidable, and software resilience is crucial, especially in modern systems composed of hundreds of services. Check out the first paper on Cross-System Interaction (CSI) failures from @tianyin_xu 's team. From yesterday's outage: one click to update, but it took forever to recover. The recommended recovery path required either "try to reboot affected machines over and over" or 20 different manual steps. CSI failures are hard to deal with because a minor error can have cascading effects on hundreds of other components. It's challenging to revert everything to a consistent previous state due to obscure cross-system dependencies. Bugs will happen -- more research on CSI testing, verification, and fault tolerance is needed!

I'm thrilled to announce that our OSDI'24 paper "Anvil: Verifying Liveness of Cluster Management Controllers" gets the Jay Lepreau Best Paper Award. Congratulations to my teammates and thanks for the recognition. I will present it in today's "Formal Verification" session. (1/6)
