TLD noobs - The Dot Thickens, Ep. 05: Replacement Period vs String Confirmation Day.
8–21 Oct: applicants can permanently switch to their pre-selected replacement. The catch? It can't match another’s primary or replacement string.
17 Nov: ICANN publishes the confirmed strings & updated contention sets.
An eligible replacement can still face contention later if strings are found confusingly similar.

A good TLD can tell you something about what sits behind the click before you ever get there.
That relevance matters. It is why grouping TLDs around distinct audiences, industries & use cases makes sense, rather than trying to make every string mean something to everyone.

With Reveal Day around the corner, you'll hear “contention set” a lot.
One string. Multiple applicants. Hello contention.
Reveal Day will show the initial sets for identical strings & variants. Later evaluations, notifications & objections can also place strings judged similar in appearance, sound, or meaning into contention too.
Once finalized, eligible Community Applications can pursue Community Priority Evaluation. Any unresolved contention goes to an ICANN auction.
Reveal Day tells us where contention begins. Question is, how will it end?
