Here’s what the media doesn’t tell you about the caricature of Israel you have in your mind.
In less than two hours, over 7 million Jewish Israelis will mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Some will go to synagogue. Some will go to the beach. Nobody will drive unless they have to. Many will not eat or drink for 25 hours, religious or not.
Then you have over 2 million Arab Israelis who will go on with their lives as usual. Many will not drive in mixed cities out of respect for their Jewish neighbors. Nobody will drive in Jewish neighborhoods. And the hospitals will only be filled with Arab doctors and nurses to let their Jewish colleagues observe the day at home. (The opposite happens on Ramadan.)
Not long ago I went out to run a few last-minute errands before the holiday begins. Every Arab I interacted with – at the dry cleaners, in the supermarket, in the elevator – wished me an easy fast.
Every one.
It happens every holiday. Any holiday. Their holidays and ours.
This is the real Israel. A country filled with Jews and Arabs that get along better than anywhere else on this planet, that nobody shows you because it’s simply not newsworthy.
It’s everyday life.
To all those who observe – have an easy fast.

Wishing a Shana Tova to all celebrating Rosh Hashanna, the Jewish New Year, tonight, may your apples be ever honeyed. And wishing everyone, everywhere, a peaceful, healthy and happier year.

WOODY SEZ is back in London, @ubsoho (off Peter St) until the 19th. And theatrecat.com recommends you go and see it, and meet America's lost soul again. Woody Guthrie sez, go. Both Thursdays include an impromptu hootenanny if you take your instrument with you...

The Proclaimers speak for a nation when they say of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, “those fucking bairns who Rowling made massive fortunes for… you would have thought someone would stand up and say, “We live in a free country!”

Since its foundation in 1824 the bravery of Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers has saved more than 146,700 lives at sea.
Hundreds of those volunteers have died attempting to save others. They are the best of us.
Any person or organisation questioning their actions or loyalty to this country should be corrected and ostracised.
Anyone can drown, but no one should.

With the heroes of the @RNLI under attack again, I’m reminded of this passage from Bill Bryson.

ALT I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.

Hold the front page! Or no, wait a minute... THE STORY @NationalTheatre is intriguing, has some high-powered performances, hits a horribly topical theme after Arday, but doesn't quite make it.. rvw up, theatrecat.com

Here's the moment I told a room filled with anti-Israel Oxford students about how my Iraqi and Tunisian family were ethnically cleansed from their homes.
My history isn't up for debate.

I found this map from 1950. Notice how Gaza belonged to Egypt and the West Bank belonged to Jordan, and there was no Palestine.
Jordan occupied the West Bank and Egypt occupied Gaza from 1948 to 1967, and during those years not once did ‘Palestinians’ try to establish an independent Palestinian state.
In fact, they only started calling for a Palestinian state after they joined forces with their Egyptian and Jordanian occupiers and lost the war they started against Israel in 1967, when Israel took over Gaza and the West Bank.
The whole Palestinian narrative is a lie.

One of the greatest speeches from Jonathan Sachs in 2020 and it is relevant NOW more than ever.
If you’ve never heard this before then I’d recommend just giving 2 and half minutes of your time.
A must listen and share.
May his memory be a blessing.
