Such an important dialogue! When individuals from the diaspora want to invest back home they face barriers that end up being prohibitive. Given that diaspora does 3x official development aid, the intermediaries building products deserve better regulatory frameworks.
Replying to @FFRemittances
This last parellel session will aim to identify new products and opportunities for pooling #diaspora resources and #investments .

[WATCH] "Even his detractors recognise his genius; they know that he was a necessary force in our society... We cannot deny the fact that Eusebius' voice was so pivotal to our democratic edifice." - @RediTlhabi pays tribute to late colleague and best friend #EusebiusMcKaiser.
Forever in our hearts. You were exactly what South Africa needed and we’re left with a profound sense of loss. Thank you @Eusebius for your immense legacy.

2.4%. On one hand, it’s a tiny share of a tiny share. On the other hand, it’s an opportunity to build a fundamentally different, unshackled, evolved investment ecosystem that works for a much broader range of participants and reflect a broader range of “returns”.
2022 broke the record in terms of amount of funding raised by startups in Africa, but also in number of deals and number of investors ‼️

A still from the video I shared with @joerogan …
This is an industrial mine in the DRC …
This is where the cobalt in our gadgets and cars comes from …
According to all their “Audits” and “Impact Reports”, this does not exist.

Even if all cobalt usage in gadgets and cars stopped tomorrow, this does NOT repair the last 12 yrs of misery suffered by the Congolese people.
Also, tech and EV co’s would still buy the copper and nickel contained in the same ore body as the cobalt. Problem NOT solved.
Sharing from my blood iPhone.
#1914 - Thank you @joerogan for providing a global platform for this crucial story about the unconscionable conditions of cobalt mining in the Congo. @StMartinsPress open.spotify.com/episode/3ZB…
Another 700kg of CO2 avoided by joining the @Rabat_Process virtually. If we want to move from #remittances to investment, something big needs to change. Regulators in the North are development actors for the South. They create the corridor for diaspora to invest in African SMEs.
Great to participate in a London-based event virtually from Cape Town. Definitely missed seeing friends in 3D, but feeling good about avoiding roughly 700kg of CO2.

"There's been an evolution; as & after we make an investment, we put clear frameworks in place for things to think about for long-term sustainability" - Adam Hadidi, BluePeak PC

"Crowdfunding is a viable tool for #sustainableinvesting with the ability to outperform other market solutions in the small deal space like SMEs. It has the ability to form new capital pools which have an impact in emerging markets." Elizabeth Howard, @TheACfA
Excited to dial in later today and talk about sustainable investments and new investment mechanisms. Quite fitting that this is a hybrid event— the second of three this month in which I’ll be speaking via Zoom. Conference season has changed for the better.

Reflecting on an incredible week in #DarEsSalaam with @CollabFFinance organised by @ZeedeG &team. A diverse network of local capital providers met to work on the unique models and practices required to finance Africa’s #missingmiddle. Proud to see many WAI Group members present.
Talking about the WAI Group ( Women in African Investments), a community of incredible women fund managers working against the odds & changing the VC/PE industry at the same time. Read our Impact Report, sponsored by Small Foundation @LizWilsonUK cnbcafrica.com/media/6302322…

7 years ago I syndicated my first deal on @angellist. Since then there have been 90 more syndicates, $30m deployed into 55 companies, 4k LPs, 50% IRR, 10 exits, ~$15m distributed and over $100m in current positions in awesome high growth companies. What a ride.
Some lessons.
