The 1994 “revolution” saw Rs win the popular vote by 6.8 pts 2006 was D + 7.9 2010 was R + 6.8 2018 was D + 8.6 2026 Ds are tracking toward a 13-pt popular vote win Have to go back half a century—the post-Watergate wipeout of 1974, D + 16.8 pts—to find anything like this.
Spent the last month wondering if 2026 could be 2006 all over again. Nope. Bigger by every metric. In fact, the biggest midterm wave in modern history—an election to which every future midterm will be compared.

A few rough options: - 1000+ full scholarships to Ivy Leagues - A couple of brand new medical research facilities - 20 public library branches - 5 or 6 museum wings - 20 new regional theatres Not that he would, as my excellent colleagues have reported... economist.com/business/2026/…
Imagine if Elon's $500 million had been spent on education or healthcare. Or the arts. Anything.

One of the big questions is what Trump does now. Does he take stock, fire people, recognise that his excesses contributed to this defeat & think about an agenda for his last two years? Does he focus on foreign policy, where he has few constraints, with unfinished business in Iran, Ukraine and Cuba? Or does he find this all too difficult, and retreat to more score-settling, statue-building and family self-enrichment in the last stretch?

Just thinking about the remarkable fact that Elon Musk will have dropped nearly a half a billion dollars on this election with no return... wow.

Truly bonkers situation here. Scheduling the championship-winning NBA game at noon on a weekday would have caused riots. WNBA organisers have to sort this out.
From @TheAthletic: The WNBA Finals starting at 12:30 p.m. Eastern is an embarrassment, our columnist writes. "Inexcusably obtuse planning, astoundingly bad optics, and most of all a wildly crappy thing to do to the people who consume your product." nyti.ms/4ssSHTm

Sorting through my wardrobe recently led me to ponder: why is merch now everywhere for everything? And why have I felt the urge to buy so much?! My piece for @TheEconomist economist.com/culture/2026/1…

Aside from the fact this is standard diplomatic practice (the US met the Iranians for three hours at the UN, as you no doubt know) do you really think it raises the level of political discourse to call people “idiots”? timesofisrael.com/us-and-ira…

Curacao and Qatar were the only #FIFAWorldCup countries I could find without a major US diaspora. Having so many home supporters is making this tournament feel especially unique: I put this chart together with the whizz @AlexSelbyB, for @TheEconomist economist.com/united-states/…

I helped put together our new index of childcare affordability across the OECD for @TheEconomist. The divergence is stark - largely explained by how generous government subsidies are - with huge knock-on effects for the labour force. Have a look 👇 economist.com/graphic-detail…

I wrote about the apparently unstoppable rise of "companion podcasts" to TV shows, and what they say about how fan culture is evolving as well as the business of streaming, in this week's @TheEconomist economist.com/culture/2026/0…
