A tragedy to be sure. But as the flames consume the some of the Third Reich's final physical legacy, something curious happens: an alchemical transmutation. A release of symbolic energy. Stone becomes light. Matter becomes myth. The fire that consumes the corpse of a great king, the flame that consumed Caesar's body before the grieving Romans, returns to the ethereal a part of the magic that was once held within the material, freeing it to again work upon the spirits of the living. Rather than remaining a tourist trap, or crumbling over time into an obscure ruin, the Kehlsteinhaus dies beautifully. And in its death, something of Hitler is reborn into the world.
