I saw a somewhat astonishing thing today. GPT was asked a question that it needed to write code to answer, and given access to a Python REPL. It wrote buggy code, then based on the error message it fixed its own code until it worked (and gave the correct answer). It debugged.

i was laid off from @CNN today (and i'm not the only one). i'm devastated; i loved my job. i was CNN's only AI reporter, and the *last remaining* CNN Digital reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area. i'm taking a beat to breathe, but i'll be looking for a new reporting job ASAP.

I have helped run an AI-based entrepreneurship program for years, written papers on the econ of AI, and follow the field quite closely. Nonetheless, I am *shocked* by how good OpenAI's new chat (chat.openai.com/chat) is. E.g., you can no longer give take-home exams/homework.

AI is the next 100x productivity boost. Copilot/Ghostwriter is just the early innings bringing 30-50% improvement. The next generation coding AI will not be mere text complete and will lead to rapid change in how we make software.

AI fits precisely into the category of technologies that are over-estimated in the near run and under-estimated in the long run. We’re now starting to approach the “long run”.
