Before we are asked to decide if we want Freedom of Movement, we need to know what it is.
It isn’t open doors with no rules
It is regulated freedom to move for work, study, retirement etc and works for the rest of the EU - because they regulate it in a way we never did.
Susanna Reid, "Why have you brought up rejoining the European Union?"
Andy Burnham, "We have a decade of experience now looking back at Brexit, and I don't think it has played out as people said at the time"
"We got a harder Brexit than was proposed in. the referendum campaign, it's weakened our economy, it's also weakened our control of immigration"
"That might surprise people because that was the big issue. - The small boats crisis has arisen since"
"I'm not proposing rejoining in this parliament"
"What I am saying is we need to take some practical steps to make things work better"
My view:
Ten years after the referendum, we can finally judge Brexit on its actual consequences rather than the promises made in 2016.
The economic evidence is substantial. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates that Brexit will leave Britain's long-term productivity 4% lower than if we had remained in the EU, with trade volumes around 15% lower.
And immigration? One of the great ironies of Brexit is that ending freedom of movement did not deliver the reductions promised. Instead, the Conservative government introduced a new immigration system, and net migration subsequently reached a record 944,000 in the year to March 2023.
We exchanged reciprocal freedom of movement, which also gave British citizens the right to live, work and retire across Europe, for a system that restricted those opportunities while initially producing substantially higher immigration.
The small boats crisis is a separate issue, but Brexit certainly did not resolve it.
There is also an important distinction between what people voted for in 2016 and the particular Brexit subsequently negotiated. The referendum did not specify leaving the Single Market or Customs Union.
Rejoining the EU would require negotiations, public consent and difficult decisions. But discussing it should not be treated as controversial or undemocratic.
Democracy did not end on 23 June 2016. Ten years of evidence should inform Britain's next decisions, not be ignored simply because the subject makes some politicians uncomfortable.
The question now is not whether Brexit can be defended as an article of faith, but what relationship with Europe will best serve Britain's economy, businesses, young people and future generations.

Met, and interviewed, a lot of world leaders in my time. Few have impressed me more than President Zelensky. He’s a man of great courage, resilience, and determination, and deserves the support of everyone who cares about defying dictators. @ZelenskyyUa

It’s time for governments to stop putting their fingers in their ears and pretending this can all go away, or pretend it will be someone else’s problem. We need to fix social care now, and I really hope, Andy Burnham will do, just that. If he does, he will have our full support.

🇬🇧 🇪🇺 Nick Clegg on Brexit
“One of the tragedies of Brexit - we voted to go it alone almost exactly at the point in history when going it alone makes less sense than ever, as the world has become dominated by rivalry between US 🇺🇸 and China 🇨🇳
“We are poorer, weaker, less safe, and, here’s the great irony, less sovereign.”
“The promise that Brexit would allow us to take back control has instead left us with less control over our destiny than, I would argue, at any time in the last several centuries.”

🇬🇧 Nick Clegg pinpoints tangible British exception:
“No other country has punched itself in the face quite so forcefully over the last 10 to 20 years.”
Britain suffered the 2008 financial crisis like everyone else, then chose to give ourselves another major economic shock through Brexit.
That’s why “Project Fear” now looks much closer to “Project Reality.”

😡 ✅ I share Nick Clegg’s anger about Brexit:
“I’m angry because I know that many of the people who propagated that lie were smart enough to know it wasn’t true.
Forget the £350 million on the side of the bus. The fundamental assertion was that you would have more control over your own fate by leaving the European Union.
🤥 All of those things are lies.
We deal with all of those issues better by working with others.”
Geography hasn’t changed. We will always be next to France, Belgium and the Netherlands … not Connecticut.

The reason why the UK is on its arse is not because of Keir Starmer.
A big reason is that too many people believed some bollocks on a bus 10 years ago.

Excellent news. As we had called for, the agreement allowing the UK to rejoin #Erasmus+ from 2027 is now in place. A concrete step to rebuild people-to-people ties. Congratulations to @NickTorfaen and @MarosSefcovic. Political will delivers results!

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp chose to side with Trump over the BBC today.
True patriots should be united in standing up for Britain against Trump's bullying.

Bias is often in the eye of the beholder
So let’s stick to measurable facts
During 10 yrs of debate about Brexit, BBC QuestionTime had Britain’s Members of the European Parliament on the show 50 times
Every single one was from the pro Brexit minority
23 times Farage
