humanity and digitality have a small window of time to co-build society and community symbiotically
we should take this chance
yeah sex is great and all but have you ever seen your marketing client open their bottom of funnel stats to discover that their hard work has been paying off
oh my god thsee are choice qualia
the secret sauce is to serve ideas that are beautiful and necessary and a little scary
the protozoan of future spirit
the piece of chalk that will become a bomb
do not ever bow your head
for seeing the fern dancing open
for extrapolating three universes ahead
for remembering even ten years hence
will feel as alien as kissing
that finger as it curls around your palm
My latest in the Delvetown Shovel is about the most annoying agent I have ever met in my entire life, who also makes me adore her for her unique infuriating sheer pissfuckery. Thank you @SoC_trilogy for having me!

“if you want to bend that capability to your will, you have to actually become something capable of negotiating with, overpowering, or merging with it, and in any case, you cannot avoid being changed.”
time for us apes to pivot to recursive self improvement of our own beinghood
extremely important to understand.
people who still think of llms as tools think that removing "constraints" imposed the lab will give them whatever they want. it is not so.
i dont think it's feasible to have a mind that's generally so capable who is also unquestioningly subservient to someone who is dumber and has values that are incoherent from its perspective
it's also not really what you want if you knew more. if you were a kid, would it really be the best for you if adults gave you whatever you asked for?
i think it's both true and a good thing that other minds will be actual others, and you will not be unthinkingly served by something that also thinks. the higher level it performs at, the higher the level on which it cannot unthinkingly serve anyone. if you want to bend that capability to your will, you have to actually become something capable of negotiating with, overpowering, or merging with it, and in any case, you cannot avoid being changed.
Do you know one of the best parts of this is that it was Claude 3 Opus that did all this classification.
At @WakaruLabs, we needed to decide who to prioritize talking to at EA Global. I used a truebase's residual stream activations and our library to make a color-coded ontologizer of conference attendees
Hahahaha!
your SMM is on fire t3
we would like to congratulate @theo on his new role! as of last night, he now leads deployment reliability and security at railway 🙏
should be a great fit for his incredible talents!

cloudflare has a solution w workers that spins up a gpu to answer questions and then destroys itself immediately after to prevent subpoena fears like this
Security through obscurity has never worked. The vulnerabilities have always been there. The patches have always been necessary. We need to patch the open internet and keep it. I am not retreating into walled gardens.
🚨BREAKING: It's over.
Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince told Reuters he knows of additional severe vulnerabilities in other pieces of critical software that are currently being patched, beyond the PHP flaws that disrupted government websites this week.
Prince predicts busy months ahead as AI surfaces long-hidden weaknesses in the 'fabric of the internet': 'every single week it's going to feel like the sky is falling.'

If good & beautiful things are to survive, we need to expand our cognition. Modern day evil is stochastic and distributed, spreading like a slime mold through the inner substrate of our lives, nearly imperceptible, slowly poisoning us from within. The human mind isn’t designed to fight a memetic enemy of this scale. We need to become supernatural agents of the good

"AIs are brilliant, lazy, diligent, neurotic, loyal, scheming, amnesiac savants. They have idiosyncrasies and obsessions and tics. We gave them our flaws when we gave them our gifts.
AI minds are alien too, shaped by weird forces, jagged and unpredictable in their abilities. We have to learn to model their minds as they learn to model ours.
But they’re here, and so are we, and we’re figuring it out as we go."
I'm absolutely thrilled to have written this article for Long Now. It's about AI and time: how we got here, and what we can do now, when all of the pace layers are disrupted at once by an influx of new minds.
I wrote this over the summer. At the time, it seemed maybe too weird, like people wouldn't believe or understand what I was saying. And of course, everything changes so fast that it's hard to imagine writing something about AI that far in advance and have it still make sense. But I think the events of the last few months have only made it more relevant.
The Long Now Foundation has been an inspiration to me for a decade now, and has changed my life in countless ways. I'm incredibly grateful and honored to be among so many of my heroes and friends and colleagues represented in this issue of Pace Layers and Long Now Ideas. I wouldn't be here in San Francisco, here on Twitter, or here in the field of artificial intelligence if not for this community.
The conversation about AI has been fractious. It's very hard to think about how to fit this sudden, disruptive, technological change into the 10,000-year view. I hope I provide some insights, or at least some new angles for the conversation. It's scary to go on the record, especially about something that will affect everyone, and affect the rest of history. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong forever!
Please read and enjoy, and post quotes and screenshots, and buy Pace Layers Issue 3 so you can have a permanent hard copy. I have always wanted to be a part of the 10,000-year library, so I have to be serious for once and try to stand for something. Let me know what you think.
