Something I've been having trouble articulating is that Picard is an ideal masculine figure. He is wise and kind and understanding but when push comes to shove he makes it clear that he will engage in violence and he's gonna be fuckin good at it

Star Trek TNG had a profound impact on me growing up, and Patrick Stewart’s role above all: the secular, rationalist, egalitarian, post-scarcity (whisper it: socialist) vision of the future, a completion of the Radical Enlightenment project married to a sort of Aristotelian sense of virtue, duty, and deep purpose, a Shakespearean, theatrical-literary, humanist forgiveness and celebration of our foibles and fallenness, and Age of Discovery romantic call to adventure and exploration. I remain a believer that this world can yet be built.
"no one hated the prequels, other than the people who were cognizant when they were released"
They fail at being epic operas even more than they fail at realism. The writing and acting is mostly flat and boring. Same goes for the cinematography. There’s nothing operatic about it. Epic perhaps in theory but certainly not in execution. You guys have created a version of the Star Wars prequels in your heads (a version that sounds pretty interesting, if only it existed) and have grafted it onto the actual films which in reality fail at whatever they were trying to do, unless they were trying to be verbose, clumsy, wooden, and bland.
It’s very clear to the rest of us that the people trying to rehab the Star Wars prequels are just nostalgic for something that they enjoyed as kids. That’s fine. I have a nostalgic attachment to some crappy 90s movies like Independence Day for example. It came out when I was 10 and at the time it seemed to me like the greatest cinematic achievement in history. But then I grew up and I can now see that Will Smith punching an alien and saying “welcome to earf” is not a high point of western art. And that’s fine. It’s stupid but I still remember it fondly. You don’t have to try so hard to intellectualize some dumb bullshit you liked when you were a kid. It’s okay. It can just be dumb bullshit, which it is.

"I don’t want an AR in the cold.
The bolt locks up, or so I’m told!
I don’t want an AR in the sand,
I do not want one in my hand!
No AR's in the jungles, please,
Where the trees speak Vietnamese!
I don’t want one in the lowland flat,
They do not work where mud is bad!
I do not want one here or there,
I don't want an AR anywhere!"
But the gun works fine in cold or heat.
In sand, or jungle, or muddy streets.
Your post complains of nothing true!
The rifle’s fine; the problem’s you!

you can kill me for this but this is what cooking should be and its imperative that we teach future generations that cooking is just throwing a bunch of shit together and not a science that has to be perfectly prepared and seasoned with a recipe that MUST be followed to a tee

in plain english, what is at stake in a Ukrainian victory is
1) the legitimacy of security guarantees in exchange for denuclearization as a diplomatic policy
2) the immutability of national borders
Accepting a peace treaty which gives up Ukrainian territory means accepting

There's an indicator species for evaluating the safety of your urban infrastructure, and it's not middle-aged men on bikes. It's women, seniors, and kids feeling safe enough to ride in their everyday clothes.

Yes the French have a more developed sustained semi-riot protest culture than us but I feel ppl have memoryholed the fact that ICE deployments were not taken lightly and that the President deployed the Marines to our second largest city to counter protests
