Are you always this determined to conflate unrelated issues, or have the past few days been a special occasion?
IDBI Bank deal is a masterclass in the BJP's tendency of privatizing the gains after socialising the costs. And no amount of mudslinging at the Congress Party can hide that.
IDBI Bank was struggling, but taxpayers nursed it back to health. But as soon as it was stabilized, the government sold it for peanuts to a foreign buyer with a former G20 Sherpa now on that buyer’s payroll.
Whataboutery and gyan won’t make that go away. Here are the questions:
❓Why was the bank sold below its own market price? IDBI closed at ₹90.39 the day before the Fairfax deal was announced. The winning bid was ₹81. Who sells at a discount to the market, and why?
❓Why was it undervalued? The bank has made thousands of crores in profit over five years, and its assets, including fixed assets in 29 states and 50 acres in Hyderabad, are said to be worth around ₹25,000 crore. It doesn’t seem all this has been priced in. Why?
❓Did the goalposts move? Was the bidding process altered before the award went to Fairfax? If yes, what changed, and who asked for it?
❓Has the bank not make thousands of crores in profit in the last 5 years? Why then is it essential to sell the majority stake of 60.72% amid opposition from bank employees?
❓Who was the other bidder? It was rejected by the Home Ministry on national security grounds. Why is its identity being hidden?
❓What about Amitabh Kant? Your longtime colleague and collaborator is now a senior adviser at Fairfax. Coincidence, or is this how future loyalties get secured?
Madam Finance Minister, stop hiding behind wordplay, and start making some sense.
We all know how @INCIndia has used Banks and financial institutions as personal entities and pressured bank employees to extend loans at their whim, bypassing prudent lending norms.
Let me list a few instances.
- In 1957, Haridas Mundra got money from LIC due to influence by the Congress leaders.
- In 1976, Indira Gandhi's government removed SBI Chairman R.K. Talwar after he refused political pressure to relax lending conditions for a company linked to Sanjay Gandhi's circle.
- Sanjay Gandhi pressured the Central Bank of India over loans to Maruti.
- B. Janardhana Poojary, MoS Finance under Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi — pressured bank employees to issue loans in the 1980s.
- Pawan Kumar Bansal, as a minister in the UPA, pressured Canara Bank to give loans to his family-linked businesses.
The IDBI Bank was handed over to us in poor shape, as IDBI itself was forced to lend to large business groups with close connections to @INCIndia leaders such as Videocon, Winsome, ABG Shipyard, Kingfisher, etc. These turned into bad loans, causing huge losses for IDBI Bank, which we recognised.
The NDA govt led by Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi revived the IDBI bank through professionalism, prudence and recapitalisation of more than Rs 25,000 crores. The IDBI Bank is now poised for its next phase of growth.
All due process has been followed in the IDBI Bank strategic restructuring, and we have already clarified this yesterday.
