55 years ago today, on November 8, 1971, Led Zeppelin's untitled fourth album came out in the US, the record we all know as Led Zeppelin IV. The UK release followed on November 19. Much of it was recorded at Headley Grange, an old house in Hampshire, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, with more work at Island Studios in London. The band left their name and the title off the sleeve entirely. The only clue was four symbols, one chosen by each member. The eight songs became rock radio's backbone: "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," "The Battle of Evermore," "Stairway to Heaven," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Four Sticks," "Going to California" and "When the Levee Breaks." It hit No. 1 in the UK and No. 2 in the US, has sold more than 37 million copies worldwide, and is certified 24x platinum in the US, double diamond. 🎈 Led Zeppelin IV is certified 24x platinum in the US, the band's biggest seller.
