I’m not a BMA member, but this statement is one I support: Reducing funding for clinical academics when numbers are already in decline fails to recognise their contribution to the health & wealth of the UK.
The financial saving is minimal but I fear the costs will be substantial
Responding to @officestudents guidance from the Secretary of State for Education setting out funding for 2026-27 for universities that imposes cuts to funding for medical academics: bma.org.uk/bma-media-centre/…

🟠 Portal hypertension: beyond varices
New in Frontline Gastroenterology (Open Access): The BSG position statement supports interim use of AASLD guidance — with important UK caveats.
📍 Focus on clinically significant portal hypertension
📊 Use VCTE + platelets to risk stratify
✅ Carvedilol preferred where appropriate
🩺 Endoscopy still matters in the “grey zone”
⚠️ Individualise decisions around NSBB tolerance and contraindications
A timely update while UK trial data are awaited.

The same also applies to the Dame Sheila Sherlock Prize Lecture. Please don’t be a victim of imposter syndrome. You have to be in it to win it! I would also like to encourage my fellow female hepatologists to apply. I wish I had found the courage to apply. It’s a big regret.
