this remind me of that what time when a Jamaican kid was making fun of BA and Haitians for being slaves and I asked him where thought Jamaicans came from & then he argued with me about it for a while

Yes, the average statehood voter is persuadable. They believe a Chinese spy called Huang Dan Mao will implement island-wide communism in less than 12 hours if elected and that Walgreens will be flown out by helicopter. They are an incredibly smart group of people.
No one claims Puerto Rico would be a safe Republican state. But Puerto Ricans are persuadable voters, and the island has elected Republican governors and sent Republicans to Congress. Sure, they don’t run on mainland platforms. It'll require some coalition-building. That's a perfectly normal and healthy function of political parties.
Also, most Puerto Ricans want statehood, and the national GOP platform endorsed it for decades. Independence has historically been associated with the left. The people defending the status quo throw up diversions to hide their economic self-interest. I get it. Everyone likes a tax shelter. But let’s be honest about the politics.

A new favourite: Charles Burnett’s When It Rains (1995). A funny, beautiful short, soaked in jazz and blues, set on New Year’s Day. It’s a small portrait of community, and of what it means to have a helping hand nearby.

Big topic today in Puerto Rico: rifle-rotting ICE thugs raided a church. Security camera image of one of them:

ah bueno pero como los dueños de restaurantes, en vez de organizarse para exigir cosas como la continuidad de servicios esenciales, accesibilidad de transporte, y otras cosas que mantienen la buena economía, prefieren abogar para explotar a sus empleados pagando sueldos de hambre
ASORE lo describe como la peor crisis. Según sus datos, todos los días un restaurante cierra en la isla. trib.al/FjRXc7N

Tellingly, within the last 5 years, the US has had to electorally interfere — via the US government, US CIA, and/or US and western corporations (e.g. META, Cambridge Analytica, X) — in states to pursue the hostile US agenda against Cuba at the UN, and the US still lost.
