#BrownNoise is having a moment on TikTok and in the news.
But when did we first start using noise as comfort sound? And why do we seem to need it?
I wrote about it for @washingtonpost:

No personal experience, but I enjoyed @mactra episode on Phantom Power where he interviews his agent: open.spotify.com/episode/5OU…

It was fascinating to talk with @mactra for this longform interview on @PhantomPod about architecture, acoustic media, and the noisy environments of open-plan offices. phantompod.org/office-noise/

New episode: @mattrubery, a literature prof who pioneered the study of audiobooks, talks narration, neurodiversity, and "audiobook shame."

I'm also @mactra at the spool place, where I'm spending a lot more time. Would love to meet up w/ you there.
I was also quoted in this WSJ piece on the opportunity costs of headphones. It was a banner day for me in the newspaper opining category!
Look around. Everyone’s on mute because of noise-canceling headphones. But now some people are rethinking their personal audio bubbles. on.wsj.com/3LSk1q3
I was quoted in this Washington Post story today. Check out the cool noise colors for fall!
Colored noises are having a major moment.
Particular “colors” of noise may lead to different outcomes. Want to fall asleep? Try pink noise. Need to focus? Brown noise may be best. wapo.st/3ZKRvfO
Just finished the first chapter of this book: stylistically bold, creepily defamiliarizing, and laugh-out-loud funny!
Blown. Away.
Was just browsing my fav bookstore, @downboundbooks, and learned the brilliant @MandySuzanneW has a new novel out. Can’t wait to dig in!

refreshing to see someone just unapologetically treat as a premise the view that surges in far-right politics is a predictable sociological phenomenon that has alterable material conditions. too much moralizing about this fact and too little strategic thinking about it imho
Pretty wild that a music critic would fly all the way to Vegas to review a new music venue and not spend a single sentence on acoustics or sound quality. Lots of grafs on “Sphere’s technological wizardry,” but all of them visual.
